VIBGYOR High First Term Examination 2017-2018 PHYSICS Grade: X Date : 13.10.2017 Max. Marks: 80 Time Allowed: 2 hours INSTRUCTIONS: Answers to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the question paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. The intended marks for the questions or parts of questions are given alongside the questions. _______________________________________________________________ SECTION A (Answer all the Questions) Question 1 [10] a. State the Snell s laws of refraction of light. b. A prism deviates a monochromatic ray of light through an angle when the angle of incidence on the surface of the prism is i : i) Draw a graph showing the variation of with i . On your graph show the angle of minimum deviation. ii) What is the relation between the angle of incidence and the angle of emergence when the ray suffers minimum deviation? c. The frequency of violet light is 7.5 x 1014 Hz. Find its wavelength in Ao. Speed of light c = 3 x 108 m/s. d. A ray of light PQ is incident normally on the face AB of an equilateral glass prism. Complete the ray diagram showing its emergence into air after passing through the prism. Take critical angle for glass = 42o. 1 e. Write two properties common to all the electromagnetic radiations. Question2 [10] a. State one factor on which the position of centre of gravity of a body depend. Explain your answer with an example. b. The illustration in figure below represents a metre scale balancing on a knife edge at 20 cm mark when a weight of 60 N is suspended from 10 cm mark. Calculate the weight of the ruler. c. Copy the diagram of the forearm given below in fig, indicate positions of Load, Effort and Fulcrum. d. Give two reasons why the efficiency of a single movable pulley is not 100%. e. A body of mass 1 kg falls from a height of 5 m. How much energy does it possess at any instant? Take g = 9.8 ms-2. Question 3 [10] a. The work done by a fielder when he takes a catch in a cricket match, is positive or negative. Explain. b. What is the effect of increase in pressure on the melting point of ice and boiling point of water? c. How much boiling water at 100 o C is needed to melt 2 kg of ice, so that the mixture which all water is at 0oC? Given:specific heat capacity of water = 4.2 J g-1 K-1 specific latent heat of ice = 336 J g-1 d. A slab of ice at 0oC is constantly heated till the steam is formed at 100oC. Draw a graph showing the change in temperature with time. Label the various parts of the graph properly. 2 e. Calculate the heat energy required to raise the temperature of 2 kg of water from 10oC to 50oC. Specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J/kgK. Question 4 [10] a. An electrical appliance is rated 1500 W, 250 V. This appliance I connected to mains of voltage 250 V. Calculate: i. The current drawn, and ii. The electrical energy consumed in 60 hours. b. Four resistance of 2.0 each are joined end to end to form a square ABCD. Calculate the equivalent resistance of the combination between any two adjacent corners. c. Two fuse wires are rated 5 A and 20 A. Which of the two is i. Thicker ii. Longer d. Name the principle on which a transformer works. Can a transformer work when it is connected to a d.c. source? e. Draw a circuit diagram using the dual control switches to light a staircase electric light and explain its working. SECTION B [Attempt any four Questions from this section] Question5 a. A lens forms an upright and diminished image of an object when the object is placed at the focal point of the given lens. i. ii. Name the lens and Draw a ray diagram to show the image formation. [3] b. What is total internal reflection? State two conditions necessary for total internal reflection to occur. [3] c. i. The diagram below shows a ray of white light PQ coming from an object P and incident on the surface of a thick glass plane mirror. Copy the diagram and complete it to show the formation of three images of the object P as formed by the mirror. ii. Which image will be the brightest image? [4] Question 6 a. A uniform metre rule weighing 50 N pivoted on a wedge placed under the 40 cm mark and carrying a weight of 80 N hanging from the 10 cm mark. The ruler is balanced horizontally by a weight W hanging from the 100 cm mark. Draw a diagram of the arrangement and calculate the value of weight W [3] b. At which point is the centre of gravity situated in: i. ii. iii. A circular disc, Rod and Parallelogram. [3] c. i. The diagrams (a) and (b) given below are of a plug and a socket with arrows marked as 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6 respectively on them. Identify and write Live (L), Neutral (N) and Earth (E) against the correct number. ii. Calculate the electrical energy consumed when a bulb of 40 W is used for12.5 hours every day for 30 days. [4] Question 7 a. What do you understand by the conservation of mechanical energy? Explain with an example. [3] b. A ball of mass 50g is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity 20m/s. Calculate: i. The initial kinetic energy imparted to the ball, 4 ii. iii. The maximum height reached if air friction is neglected, and The maximum height reached if 20% of the initial energy is lost against the air friction. Take g = 10 m/s2 [3] c. Calculate the amount of ice which is required to cool 150 g ofwater contained in a vessel of mass 100 g at 30oC, such that the final temperature of the mixture is 5 oC. (Take specific heatcapacity of material of vessel as 0.4 J g-1 o -1 C , specific latentheat of fusion of ice = 336 J g-1, specific heat capacity of water= 4.2 J g-1 oC-1) [4] Question 8 a. i. Which simple machine is used by labourers to lift heavy loads on a construction site? ii. Does a single fixed pulley help us to multiply force? In what way is it useful? [3] b. i. ii. A body is thrown vertically upwards. Its velocity keeps on decreasing. What happens to its kinetic energy as its velocity becomes zero? Draw a diagram to show how a single pulley can be used so as to have its ideal M.A= 2. [3] c. A copper vessel of mass 100 g contains 150 g of water at 50oC. How much ice is needed to cool it to 5oC? Given: Specific heat capacity of copper = 0.4 Jg -1 C-1 Specific heat capacity of water = 4.2 Jg -1 C-1 Specific latent heat of fusion ice = 336 Jg-1 [4] Question 9 a. i. Two sets A and B, of three bulbs each, are glowing in two separate rooms. When one of the bulbs in set A is fused, the other two bulbs also cease to glow. But in set B, when one bulb fuses, the other two bulbs continue to glow. Explain why this phenomenon occurs. ii. Why do we prefer arrangements of Set B for house circuiting? [3] b. An electric iron is rated at 750 W, 230 V. Calculate the electrical energy consumed by the iron in 16 hours. If the cost of electricity is Rs.5 per unit, calculate the total cost. [3] c. i. ii. Name two factors on which the magnitude of an induced e.m.f. in the secondary coil depends. In the following diagram an arrow shows the motion of the coil towards the bar magnet. a) State in which direction the current flows, A to B or B to A? b) Name the law used to come to the conclusion. [4] Question10 a. What is an electric fuse? Give two characteristics of fuse. [3] b. i. Which instrument can be used to detect a current carrying wire in an enclosed wall? Give justification. ii. State right hand thumb rule. [3] c. 40 g of water at 60 C is poured into vessel containing 50g of water at 20 C.The final temperature of the mixture is 30 C. Taking the specific heat capacity of water as 4.2Jg 1 K 1; calculate the thermal capacity of the vessel. [4] 6
