He wanted to compete with the best and for that Jesse had to be in the competition. He knew and understood the pressure that Jesse was under. He did not believe in the Nazi superiority theory. He put aside his urge to win to help a fellow athlete. He was selfless in his advice and intent. [16] The caged bird sings With a fearful trill Of things unknown But longed for still And his tune is heard On the distant hill For the caged bird Sings of freedom. a) How does the free bird experience delight in movement and freedom of expression? [4] Maya Angelou writes about the African American as the caged bird and the struggle against racism. The free bird is the white American who can achieve whatever he wants as he is free. It is autobiographical because Angelou represents African American women poets who have tried for years to have their voices heard and accepted in literature. [Subjective] Question 7.
