Extract 1 This exasperated the aunt. She threatened to take her case before the Panchayat. Nothing could please Jumman better. He knew that the Panchayat could give one decision and one only. [i] Who is Jumman? What is a Panchayat? (3) [ii] What exasperated the anut? (3) [iii] What is the case she threatened to take to the Panchayat? (3) [iv] Why is Jumman pleased when his aunt wants to take the case to the Panchayat? (3) [v] Give a brief description of the aunt. What does she do to elicit support for her case? (4) ANSWERS: [I] Jumman is a respected member of the village community, held in high esteem by other members because of his learning. He has no equal in drafting a petition or drawing up a deed in the village. The Panchayat is a village committee consisting of five or more villagers. The members are elected by the villagers to solve disputes and other problems of the village. [ii] After Jumman s aunt had transferred her property to him legally, he and his wife Kariman began to ill-treat her. His wife abused her daily and grudged her even the little food she ate. Unable to bear the torture, she complained to her nephew who, instead of listening to her, sided with his wife. [iii] She threatened to complain to the Panchayat that after taking all her property Jumman and his wife were illtreating her and had refused to give her an allowance which she had wanted to set up an independent kitchen. [iv] Jumman is pleased as he is sure that the Panchayat members will side with him because he had obliged each villager in some way or other. [v] The aunt is an aged woman with grey hair and toothless mouth and body bent as a bow. She drags her unwilling feet going from villager to villagers pouring out her pitiable tale to seek support for ensuring justice for herself. Extract 2 With one bullock dead, Alagu had now no use for the other. For long he tried hard to secure another bullock to make up his pair, but without success. He therefore decided to sell it. [i] How was a rift caused between Alagu and Jumman? (3) Jumman had a maternal aunt who had transferred him some property under the condition that she would be well looked after. After the transfer Jumman became indifferent to her and his wife ill-treated the old woman. Jumman did not intervene. The old lady asked him for an allowance so that she could set up a separate kitchen. When this was refused, the old lady decided to approach the Panchayat. At the Panchayat she nominated Alagu as the head Panch. Jumman expected Alagu to rule in his favour because he and Alugu were good friends. He was taken aback when Alagu, being fair and just, ruled in favour of the old woman and declared that she must be paid an allowance or the transfer of property to Jumman would be deemed void. Jumman was hurt by Alagu s decision and thus a rift was created. [ii] Where had Alagu purchased the bullocks from? Why were they the envy of the whole village? How did the death of the bullock intensify the conflict between Alagu and Jumman? (3) Alagu had purchased the bullocks from the Bateshwar fair, a year ago. The whole village was envious because the bullocks were fine specimen that had beautiful long curved horns and were of the western breed. When a bullock died suddenly, Alagu suspected that Jumman had poisoned it. His wife went round publicly accusing Jumman. The wives of the two also fought viciously. Thus the conflict between Alagu and Jumman intensified. [iii] Whom did Alagu sell the other bullock to? What were the conditions of the sale? How did this man treat the bullock? (3) Alagu sold the bullock to SamjhuSahu who was a cart-driver. Sahu agreed to pay the bullock s price in a month s time. He overworked the animal. His daily routine was three or four trips between the village and the town. The bullock was hardly allowed to rest or take its full feed. It became weak and was reduced to a skeleton. It could hardly drag the cart. When it slowed down or failed to drag the cart. Sahu would rain blows on it. As a consequence it soon died. [iv] What was the conflict between Sahu and Alagu? (3) More than the death of the bullock, Sahu was upset because he had lost the merchandise of ghee and the money on his person had been stolen. His wife lamented that they had lost their life s savings. Several months after this, Alagu reminded Sahu about the payment due and the couple flew at him like mad dogs . They refused to pay up and heaped insults on Alagu at every given opportunity. After a particularly intense bout of fighting between Alagu and Sahu, when Sahu s wife provoked Alagu, he retaliated by beating her up. People advised them to approach the Panchayat to settle the matter. [v] How did Alagu and Jumman reconcile? (4)
