In excess ammonium hydroxide the white ppt produced by zinc nitrate will dissolve to produce a colourless solution whereas the white ppt produced by lead nitrate does not get dissolved in excess ammonium hydroxide

The soldier boy said " not Much" because he wanted to tell the narrator that he was not as hurted as his fellow comrades who were also with him.  They were all dead whereas he had only a pain in his chest. 

This tells us that the soldier boy was filled with mental strength although he was physically in a terrible condition.  

We can conclude about the character of the soldier boy that he was a strong, determined young man who is filled with patriotism and is stoic in nature. 

This is because although knowing that he was dying, he was not ready to accept it. Although he had no physical energy, he was filled with mental power. Till his last breath he kept on blaming himself for his condition and was sure that it was because of an ill health that he was feeling cold, and not because death was knocking at his door.
