The Merchant of Venice : Shakespeare Question 1. Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: Arragon: I am enjoin d by oath to observe three things First, never to unfold to anyone Which casket twas I chose; next, if I fail Of the right casket, never in my life To woo a maid in way of marriage; Lastly, if I do fail in fortune of my choice, Immediately to leave you and be gone . (i)Where is the Prince of Arragon? Why had he come here? Who had come before him with the same purpose? [3] (ii)Why had Portia been upset by this system of choosing her husband? Speak not against my bond! I have sworn an oath that I will have my bond. Thou call 'dst me dog before thou hast a cause, But since I am a dog, beware my fangs. The Duke shall grant me justice. (i) Why is Shylock so agitated? Why is he confident that the duke shall grant him justice? [3] (ii) What are the details of the 'bond' Shylock is referring to? [3] (iii) Why did Antonio agree to such a bond? What was his confidence based on? Why could he not fulfill the conditions of the bond? [3] (iv) What reasons does Shylock give for choosing rotten flesh over money? [3] (v) Does Shylock get justice as he expected? How is he caught in the trap he had set for his adversary? Do you think that Shylock deserved the punishment given to him? Give one reason to justify your answer. [4] SECTION B POETRY Answer at least one question from this Section. Treasure Trove- A Collection of Poems Question 4. Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: Their logs held tight in death's still hands Was proof of human sin. They didn't die from the cold without They died from the cold within. (i)How many people were there in the group? Where were they? What was the weather like? [3] (ii) What 'human sin' have these people committed? What was the consequence? [3] (iii) Why does the poet refer to the group as forlorn? (i)What was the poet doing before he caught sight of the daffodils? What does he compare himself to? What is the poetic device used here? Please explain!' (i) At the beginning of the poem, what important thing does the poet say we ve learnt? [3] (iv) List the ways in which television viewing affects the mind of a 'beloved tot'. [3] (v) What does the poet advise readers to do? What will happen if they followed his suggestion? Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: "Did you leave the dove cage unlocked?" I asked. "Yes." "Then they'll fly" "Yes, certainly they'll fly. But the others. It's better not to think about the others," he said. "If you are rested I would go," I urged. "Get up and try to walk now." "Thank you," he said and got to his feet, swayed from side to side and then sat down backwards in the dust. (i) Who is the speaker? Whom is he addressing? Where are they? Why are they there? [3] (ii) What was the person spoken to worried about? What was he not particularly concerned about? Why? [3] (iii) How does the attitude of the speaker towards this person change at the end? What was the only good luck the old man would ever have? [3] (iv) What was the activity at the bridge? Why did the narrator urge the person to get up and try to walk? [3] (v) What else do you know about this person? What can you assess about the physical and mental state of this person? How does he depict the sadness of war? [4] Question 8 Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow. The foreigner followed his look and decided that it would be a sound policy to show an interest in the old man's pets. He went up casually to them and stroked their backs with every show of courteous attention. Now the truth dawned on Muni. His dream of a lifetime was about to be realised. (i)Where was Muni when the foreigner met him? What was he doing? [3] (ii) What did Muni often dream of? [3] (iii) How was the foreigner dressed? Why did Muni feel the urge to run when he first laid eyes on him? What stopped him from doing so? [3] (iv) What was the visitor actually interested in? What did he offer Muni soon after they met? [4] (iii) Narrate the interaction that Joe and Jane Thompson had with Maggie afterwards. How did Jane Thompson's decision change? Who according to you is the angel in disguise? Why?
