Total No. of Questions : 12] P1163 [Total No. of Pages : 3 [3664]-243 B.E. (Instrumentation & Control) PROCESS INSTRUMENTATION - I (2003 Course) Time : 3 Hours] [Max. Marks : 100 Instructions to the candidates: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) Answer three questions from section I and three questions from section II. Answers to the two sections should be written in separate books. Neat diagrams must be drawn wherever necessary. Figures to the right indicate full marks. Use of logarithmic tables, slide rule, Mollier charts, electronic pocket calculator and steam tables is allowed. Assume suitable data, if necessary. SECTION - I Q1) a) State various factors considered in ISA 75.02 for testing capacity of a control valve. Explain any two factors in detail. [8] b) A control valve regulates liquid flow from a tank. The water level is to be controlled in this tank at a level of 25 feet by regulating the outflow. The measured inflow varies from 0 to 120 gallons per minute. Calculate CV and suggest a suitable valve for this application. Instead of the valve discharging to atmosphere, if it discharges into a second tank with head of 15 feet. The maximum flow through is 120 gpm. Calculate CV and suggest a suitable valve for this application. [8] OR Q2) a) Describe the terms Cavitation and Flashing w.r.t. control valves. State giving reasons whether the following statement is true or otherwise. Flashing is more hazardous than Cavitation . [8] b) Comment on valves used for high temperature and high pressure applications. [8] Q3) a) For the following processes select the PID settings with justification.[10] i) A process with dead time and multiple capacity. ii) A gas pressure control process with single capacity. P.T.O. b) In a flow control system consider a 200 ft. length of 1- in schedule 40 pipe, containing water flowing at 10 gal/min with a drop of 20 1b/in2. = 62.4 1b/ft3, g = 32.2 ft/s2, A = 0.06 ft2. Calculate time constant of the process. [6] OR Q4) a) Derive the first order differential equation for self-regulating process.[8] b) List all dynamic elements in a control loop and explain the effect of any two on a control loop. [8] Q5) a) What is Multivariable Control ? Compare its performance with Single [10] variable Control . b) Explain the difference between Cascade Control and Feed back + Feed forward Control . [8] OR Q6) a) What is Dual Mode Concept for attaining better control? How the selection of two controllers is done? [10] b) With suitable example justify the use of selective control in process [8] equipment protection. SECTION - II Q7) a) List the various function blocks available in SLPC. Explain the utility of any two function blocks with suitable application. [8] b) In a heat exchanger process following data is available i) Flow of cold water (F) : 0-100 gpm. Normal reading : 60 gpm. ii) Output temperature range : 25-75 F Normal reading : 50 F iii) Temperature of coldwater input range : 0-50 F Normal reading : 30 F iv) Rate of heat transfer (Q) range : 0-60,000 BTU/hr Normal reading : 48000 BTU/hr. Considering equation, Q = F.K (T2-T1) for the heat exchanger, apply scaling and convert to normalized form. Also draw the instrumentation scheme. [10] OR [3664]-243 2 Q8) Explain in brief with proper examples the steps involved in analysing i) Flow control system. ii) Temperature control system. [18] Q9) a) Draw the block diagram of the Predictive Controller and explain its working. [8] b) What is self tunning controller? Explain the working using block schematic. What are various limitations of this controller. [8] OR Q10) a) Function charts of model based controllers are to be prepared before implementing it explain. [8] b) Compare Intelligent controllers with conventional controllers. [8] Q11) a) Explain the terms Fuzzifier and Defuzzifier w.r.t. fuzzy controller.[8] b) What is SPC? Explain its importance in process industry. In a process control application specify when not to use SPC. [8] OR Q12) a) Explain the techniques for analysis of process control performance using ANN. [8] b) With the help of block schematic explain the working of Model Predictive [8] Controller . [3664]-243 3
