Marks : 100 Instructions to the candidates: 1) Answer three questions from section-I and three questions from section-II. 2) Answers to the two sections should be written in separate books. 3) Neat diagrams must be drawn wherever necessary. 4) Figures to the right indicate full marks. 5) Use of logarithmic tables, slide rule, Mollier charts, electronic pocket calculator and steam tables is allowed. 6) Assume suitable data, if necessary. SECTION - I Q1) a) Discuss with neat sketches the following lay outs i) ii) [8] Front Engine - Rear Wheel Drive. Four wheel drive. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of each layout. b) Explain with sketch the diaphragm spring type clutch; covering the advantages and characteristic curves comparing with coil spring type clutch. [8] OR Q2) a) What are the requirements of good clutch? b) Discuss classification of Automobiles. [4] [4] c) Explain the fluid coupling with sketch covering the advantages/ disadvantages and characteristics. [8] Q3) a) Explain the working of constant Mesh Gear Box with suitable sketch. What are its advantages/disadvantages compared to other type of gear boxes. [8] b) Explain the following : [8] i) ii) iii) iv) Rolling Resistance. Air Resistance. Gradient Resistance. Draw bar pull. P.T.O. OR Q4) A motor vehicle weighs 7975.5N and its engine develops 14.7kW at 2500 RPM. At this engine speed, the road speed of the car on the top gear is 64.37km/hr. Bottom gear reduction is 3.5 : 1 and the transmission efficiency is 88% on top gear and 80% on bottom gear. The diameter of the tyres is 0.762m and the projected froutal area of the vehicle is 1.116m2. The coefficient of air resistance is 0.0314 N-hr2/km2-m2. R = kAV2 where R is resistance in N, K is coefficient of resistance, A is the froutal area in m2, V is the vehicle speed in km/hr. The coefficient of rolling resistance is 0.023. Calculate : a) Speed of car on bottom gear. b) Tractive effort available at the wheels on top and bottom gear. c) Gradient which car can climb on bottom gear. d) The tractive force at the wheels required to start-up the car on the level and attain a speed of 48.28 km/hr in 10 second. (Average air resistance may be taken as half the maximum and accelerating force to vanish at 48.28 km/hr speed. [16] Q5) a) Discuss Air Suspension with a neat sketch. What are the advantages/ [10] disadvantages of this suspension? b) Write a short note on Torsion Bar with a neat sketch. [8] OR Q6) Write short notes on any three : [18] a) Shock Absorber. b) Preventive maintenance Vs breakdown maintenance. c) Leaf spring. d) Helper spring.
