Assignment 1 Justice knows neither friendship nor enmity comment on the topic in terms of the lesson god lives in the panch Introduction Munshi Premchand (1880-1936) was a famous Indian author. He wrote many novels and short stories, Premchand participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921. He became well known for his contribution to Urdu Journals and novels. His writings reflect the social evils of arranged marriages and the abuses of British bureaucracy. Some of his great contributions to Hindi literature were Rangabhumi (1924) Gaban (1928), Karmabhumi (1931) Godan and Panch Parameshwar (1916), Premchand pioneered in adapting Indian themes to western literary styles. In this part of the project, an elaboration of the philosophy that Justice Knows Neither Friendship nor Enmity is explored through his work, God Lives in the Panch , which is the English adaption of his Hindi story, Panch Parameshwar Topic The panchayat raj system of Indian villages was introduced on the insistence of Mahatma Gandhi. He said that the villagers know their own problems well and hence it would be just for they themselves to form their own justice system. The government took certain steps and now most villages follow this system. The villagers felt that the head panch was the messenger of god who voiced god s opinions therefore took the head Panch s words seriously. In the story God Lives in the Panch .the philosophy Justice knows neither friendship nor enmity is proved through the events which take place in a village in India between two childhood friends, Jumman sheikh and Alagu Choudhry. Their friendship was tested when Jumman was taken to the panchayat to settle a dispute between his aunt and himself. Jumman s aunt had transferred a plot of land to Jumman with the promise that Jumman would take good care of her for the remainder of her short life. But once the land was transferred, the good treatment which she received before the transfer was nowhere to be seen once it was done. She was grumbled the little food which she ate by Jumman s wife and her needs, complaints and wants were not listened to by Jumman. Having had enough of this ill treatment, she demanded a monthly allowance from Jumman from the yields of the plot of land to live in another place. She was refused and hence she took the matter to the village panchayat. At the panchayat a head panch was to be appointed by one of the disputees. Jumman offered that his aunt makes the choice and he would go along with it. To his surprise his best childhood friend, Alagu Choudhry was nominated. He was elated and thought that his friend would take his side and would not cross examine him too much. And he was sure that he would win the case. But when Alagu was nominated as head panch and was expected to let Jumman win the case just because he was his friend, he felt the urge to prove them wrong and cross examined Jumman so thoroughly that Jumman was trying to remember any grudge which Alagu seemed to be satisfying then. It so happened that Alagu pronounced the verdict in favour of Jumman s aunt and made Jumman pay her a monthly allowance. This caused a drift between Alagu and Jumman and they became enemies. The first panchayat session depicts the fact that justice disregards friendship in the search for the truth through Alagu who upon being appointed as head panch disregarded his ties of friendship with Jumman and cross examined him thoroughly and pronounced a fair verdict. A few months later, Alagu was called upon to another panchayat session but this time as the accused. He had been accused by Samjhu Sahu, a trader, of selling him a bull which was ill at an unholy hour and had hence caused the loss which he suffered when the bull died at an abandoned road where he was robbed. The truth was that the bull, when sold, was fit and healthy but Samjhu sahu had over worked it and not taken proper care of it and therefore it died. But he wanted to blame Alagu for it. At the panchayat session Alagu like, Jumman asked Samjhu to nominate the head panch. Samjhu, knowing about the ill feelings between Alagu and Jumman, nominated Jumman as the head panch to which Alagu could not object. In this scenario, Alagu felt, unlike Jumman in the previous session, disappointed and worried with this appointment and knew that Jumman would surely pronounce the verdict against Alagu as revenge. Now when Jumman was appointed he too was faced with expectations. Jumman was expected by everyone present there to rule the case against Alagu as revenge. But he was too overwhelmed with the responsibility given to him to remember his enmity with Alagu. He defied all the villagers expectations and cross examined the case with an equal hand and gave the verdict in favour of Alagu. This judgement on his part was absolutely correct and without any hatred influencing it. Here we see the part of the phrase which says that justice doesn t know any enmity. It was justified in the case of Jumman who wanted revenge but did not extract it at the hearing but instead turned a blind eye to the hatred and reviewed the case with a neutral mind. In the end Jumman realised the responsibility that comes with being a head panch and forgave Alagu and their friendship bloomed once again. Thus, Premchand has through this story, shows clearly that either friendship or enmity cannot effect the right judgement of The Panchs and justified the phrase that Justice knows neither friendship nor enmity .
