SECOND PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION 2020-2021 STD: X TIME: 2 hrs. CHEMISTRY DATE: 16.02.2021 SCIENCE Paper 2 MARKS: 80 Answer to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the question paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. This paper is divided into two sections. Attempt all the questions from section I and any four questions from section II. The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets []. This paper consists of six printed pages. Nothing should be written on the question paper. Section I (40 marks) Attempt all questions from this section. Question 1 a) Choose the most appropriate answer from the following options: [5] i) Among the period 2 elements, the element which has high electron affinity is A. Lithium B. Carbon C. Chlorine D. [5] i) Ethene is passed through an alkaline solution of KMnO4. ii) Ammonia is passed through Nessler s reagent. iii) Hydrochloric acid is added to silver nitrate solution. iv) Lead nitrate is strongly heated. v) Ammonia is passed over lead (II) oxide. f) i) Draw the structural formula of the following compounds: [3] A) Propan-2-ol B) 2-methyl propane. C) Ethanoic acid. ii) Rewrite the following using greater than or lesser than. [2] A) The ionization energy of sodium is--------potassium. B) The reducing power of sodium is--------magnesium. 2 Cont d on page 3 g) Correct the following statements by changing the highlighted words: [5] i) Ionic compounds undergo ionization when dissolved in water. ii) In a molecule of ammonia there are two bond pairs and two lone pairs of electron. iii) Argon has the highest ionization energy in the periodic table. iv) Molecular formula shows the simple whole number ratio between the atoms of the elements in the compound. v) The rocky impurities associated with the ore are called flux. h) M is a metal above hydrogen in the activity series and its oxide has the formula MO. This oxide when dissolved in water forms the corresponding hydroxide which is a good conductor of electricity. In the above context answer the following: [5] i) What kind of bond is formed between M and O? ii) How many electrons are there in the outermost shell of M? iii) Name the group to which M belongs. iv) State the reaction taking place at the cathode. v) Name the product at the anode. SECTION II (40 Marks) Attempt any four questions from this section. Question 2 a) Give scientific reasons for the following statements. i) Iron is rendered passive with fuming nitric acid. ii) An aqueous solution of sodium chloride conducts electricity. iii) Cl- ions are larger in size than Na+ ions. iv) Alkali metals are good reducing agents. v) Hydrogen chloride gas cannot be dried over quick lime. b) Give the scientific terms for the following: i)The ability of carbon to form long chain. ii) Compounds containing carbon and hydrogen only. iii) The type of reaction undergone by alkenes. iv) The type of isomerism exhibited by but-1-ene and but-2-ene. v) The type of isomerism exhibited by n-butane and 2-methyl propane. [5] [5] Question 3 a) Give reasons for the following with respect to the process of electrolysis: [5] i) In the process of electroplating an article with silver, sodium silver cyanide is preferred as an electrolyte to silver nitrate. 3 Cont d on page 4 ii) When copper sulphate solution is electrolyzed using platinum electrode, the blue colour of the solution fades. iii) During the process of electrolysis of water, acidification is done by adding sulphuric acid and not by adding hydrochloric acid or nitric acid. iv) Silica crucible is used as voltameter in the electrolysis of molten lead bromide. v) Electrolysis is an example of redox reaction. b) The Diagram shows the laboratory preparation of HCl gas. Answer the questions given [5] below. i) Identify A, B and C. ii) What does the method of collection tell you about the density of hydrogen chloride? iii) Write the equation for the reaction. iv) Why nitric acid cannot be used for preparation of HCl gas? v) How would you check whether the gas jar is filled with hydrogen chloride? Question 4 a) Find the total percentage of nitrogen in magnesium nitrate crystals Mg(NO3)2.6H2O.
