Each question should be answered in about thirty (30) words and each question carries five (5) marks. (5x5=25 marks) (5) (30) (5) (5x5=25 ) The pioneers of Indian Sociology during the 1920s and 1930s were not only exposed to the British and European academic cultures but were also influenced deeply by the emerging nationalist consciousness. This is reflected in their contributions and more importantly in their questioning of the various presuppositions of Western Sociology s interpretation of the Indian reality. For instance, most of them challenged the validity of looking at Indian institutions from a universal evolutionary schematization neglecting its historical specificity and civilizational depth. Others found serious limitations in attempts to analyse Indian social structure from an atomistic-individualistic frame of reference which was totally incompatible with the communitarian-wholisitic principles of Indian social organization. Yet others suspected ideological biases in most Western sociologists preoccupation in their Indian studies, with the elements of discreteness and isolation in the social system to the exclusion of organic linkages and systemic bonds. There was criticism from the pioneers generation of Indian sociologists of most such studies for not being concerned with issues of development and social change, the main focus being on continuity and static socio-graphy. The social conditioning of the concepts and paradigms of Indian sociology is made visible in this difference of perspectives on Indian social reality. It is also visible in the manner in which the issues of relevance were differently postulated.
