Candidates are required to attempt the questions contained in these sections according to the detailed instructions given herewith. (200) (4) S J 1105 2 SECTION - I U I This section contains five (5) questions based on the following paragraph. Each question should be answered in about thirty (30) words and each carries five (5) marks. (5x5=25) (5) (30) (5) Read the following passage and answer all the five questions below in thirty words each (total : 150 words) : The stroke of midnight on the night of the 14 th A ugust 1947 ushered in independent India, and with it devolved the responsibilities for the security of the country on the new Government of India. By circumstances and inclination the problems of defence were a closed book to the country s leaders. India had achieved freedom through a policy of non-violence. India loved peace and had no aggressive designs. The world had emerged from the holocaust of the second world war, whose termination was heralded by the devastating explosion of the nuclear bomb. The very power of destruction contained in the new device seemed to make future wars unprofitable and meaningless.
