After the Second World war the Japanese people reconstructed their economy which had suffered a deadly blow, and desperately worked to enrich their lives. Japan thus passed through the period of high economic growth centered in the 1960 S and grew into a major economic power. Yet, with respect to the excess in exports and the same long working hours, Japan had been criticised as being workaholic. Thus, by spending five days a week and improving the frequency of paid vaccations, the government began to hammer out a policy of reducing the actual work time. The recession following the collapse of Bubble Economy unintentionally and effectively promoted the reduction in working hours. 25. One year at the university dormitory was enough. It was a comfortable place, but I was tired of sharing the six-tatami-mat room with another person. Waiting in line to take a shower was not very excitig either. It was time for me to move to my own place. I did not have a lot of money, but I knew what I wanted. I wanted my new home to be in Tokyo, close to a subway or train-station, and not too far from Shinjuku and other important shopping areas. After carefully studying the map of Tokyo, I decided that the area around Yoyog i-Uehara station was the right place for me. Here, the neighbourhood is good and quiet. Prices in the Department stores and restaurants are reasonable. Shinjuku is only ten minutes away. Shimo Kitazawa is even closer. This is the right place for me. But I have communication problem. My Japanese is enough to carry on conversation. So I need to go to a real estate agent who can speak English and who deals with foreign customers. D 4505 15 P.T.O.
