HOME SCIENCE PAPER III - III NOTE : This paper is of two hundred (200) marks containing four (4) sections. Candidates are required to attempt the questions contained in these sections according to the detailed instructions given therein. (200) (4) S D 1208 2 SECTION - I U I Note : This section contains five (5) questions based on the following paragraph. Each question should be answered in about thirty (30) words and each question carries five (5) marks. (5x5=25 marks) ( 5) (30) ( 5) (5x5=25 ) Recent studies by economists emphasise that devoting resources to child nutrition and health, far from being mere sectoral advocacy, is among the most economically justified uses of public resources. Children are an investment. Committing resources to protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrition deficiencies in children accrue gains in three broad channels. First there is productivity gain whereby children s physical capacity to perform task directly improves and indirectly there are gains through cognitive development and schooling attainments. Secondly reduction in IMR, lowering of chronic diseases and reduced cost of health care of infants and children results in saving of resources. Third, there would be intergenerational benefits through subsequent generations being more productive through improved health. The magnitude of gains is tremendous, though measuring it is a great challenge. A 1% lower adult height, as a consequence of poor nutrition in childhood is associated with a 1.4% loss of productivity and 2.24% reduced earnings as an adult. The productivity impact via cognitive development and schooling is no less important. Poorly nourished children tend to start school later, make slower progress through school and have lowerer school attainments. Better nourished children repeat fewer grades, and have less chance of dropping out. Malnutrition tended to reduce lifetime earnings by 12% because of low school attainment. All together conservative estimate of productivity looses in India due to stunting, iodine and iron deficiency is 2.95% of GNP. D 1208 3 P.T.O. Intergenerational transmission is manifested when a small statured girl grows to be a woman with small stature who again is more likely to give birth to children with LBW. The gains from addressing nutritional issues in the generation will be passed on to the next generation. The empirical evidence is unequivocal and persuasive. Not only is there a gain in absolute term, the economic value of benefits from a class of health and nutrition intervention far out-weigh the costs. Thus not only are children investment, they might well be among the most productive resource available in developing countries. S U U U S S U , , M , U - U U U U U , , U U U M U U M S U , . .
