Each question should be answered in about thirty (30) words and each carries five (5) marks. (5x5=25 marks) ( 5) (30) ( 5) (5x5=25 ) The growth of population in India is a recent phenomenon; the population has been fluctuating and growing very slowly until about 1921. Since then it has been growing continuously as a result of declining general mortality, infant mortality and increase in expectation of life at birth. India s population has grown approximately four times from 1901 to 2001 namely from 238.4 to 1027 million respectively. Out of the total population as per the 1991 census 215 million people were residing in urban areas and 621 in rural residing areas. There has been a sharp increase in the urban population (1961 to 1991) which has increased about 3 times as against only 2 times in rural area. Growing urbanization is a recent and unstoppable phenomenon in developing countries. With the advances in industrialization more and more people are being attracted towards the industrialized centers. The continuous migration of people from country side to urban areas constitutes a social crisis, which ultimately affects the quality of life of people. One of the emerging problems today that the country is facing is of growing urban slum population. Rural folks migrate to cities in search of employment and better social status. These migrants settle incites in places where suboptimal infrastructure for housing, electricity and sewerage system is available. Generally slum population have more young people and children and fewer elderly than the population as a whole. Slums on the whole have lower sex ratio than the cities than they are located. Slums and pavement dwellers are overwhelmingly poor rural migrants primarily from lower castes and disadvantaged communities who are pushed to the cities through caste, kinship and village networks.
