Candidates are required to attempt the questions contained in these sections according to the detailed instructions given therein. (200) (4) S D 1206 2 SECTION - I U I Note : This section contains five (5) questions based on the following paragraph. Each question should be answered in about thirty (30) words and each carries five (5) marks. (5x5=25 marks) (5) (30) (5) (5x5=25 ) Social marketing has proven to be a very effective approach in accomplishing the objectives of many public health programmes. The term social marketing describes the application of marketing principles to the design and management of social programmes. It is a strategic social change management approach involving the design, implementation and control of culturally acceptable programmes. Social marketing is a systematic approach to solving problems. It is related to service utilization, product development and acceptance and behaviour adoption. Social marketing may involve both the selling of a commodity and the selling of an idea or practice. Social marketing almost always begins with promotion of a health related attitude or belief. The principles governing social marketing are many. It primarily focuses on consumer need. It requires structuring of the programme organisation and management. It seeks commercial avenues for products traditionally produced in developmental sector. It is result oriented and aims at achieving goals. Social marketing conceives the consumer as the centre of a process involving four variables such as product, price, place and promotion. Product refers to a commodity, idea or health practice and it must be defined in terms of the user s beliefs, practices and values. Price can refer to a monetary expenditure, an opportunity cost, a status loss or a consumers time. Place refers to the channels through which products flow to users and the points at which they are offered. It involves not only retail and wholesale supply system but also the efforts of health providers, volunteer workers, friends and neighbours. Place may be a store, a health centre, an anganwadi or even a person such as a traditional birth attendant who carries a supply of ORS. In any social marketing activity promotion requires more than simple advertising. It requires extensive consumer education to assure appropriate use of products and motivational strategies. D 1206 3 P.T.O. The primary purpose of social marketing is to bring about a change in behaviour and not just importing information. The second purpose of social marketing is demand creation. Very often demand has not been realised by the programme providers. The technique basic to social marketing is formative research technique. In promoting behaviour changes and in creating demand social marketing uses a feed forward approach that minimizes feed back shocks , which is called as formative research. This helps to shape the products and fine tune the promotional angle. Social marketing requires creativity in message design and communication creativity is needed further for implementing qualitative research free of researcher bias and for developing programme strategies based on research findings.
