(200) (4) S D 1207 2 SECTION - I U I Note : This section contains five (5) questions based on the following paragraph. Each question should be answered in about thirty (30) words and each carries five (5) marks. (5x5=25 marks) ( 5) (30) ( 5) (5x5=25 ) The term Juvenile delinquency covers a broad range of illegal activities committed by a child or adolescent. At the most extreme end, it includes serious behaviours such as homicide, rape and robbery, which are considered criminal acts regardless of the age of the offender, other less serious offences, such as truancy, underage drinking, running away from home, and sexual promiscuity, are considered illegal only when performed by minors. Hence these are known as status offences . Boys are much more likely than girls to engage in most delinquent behaviours. Boys are more apt to commit crimes of violence whereas girls are more likely to commit status offences such as truancy or running away. Who is most likely to engage in delinquent behaviour ? Many risk factors are associated with Juvenile delinquency. No one variable stands out as being most serious. Most likely, it is combination of several factors that increases the odds of a child s showing delinquent behaviour. Children who show aggressive, antisocial and hyperactive behaviour at any early age are more likely to show delinquent behaviour in adolescence. Personal factors include poor school performance, little interest in school, low self-esteem, impulsivity, early sexuality and having delinquent friends. Family factors also are powerful predictors of delinquent behaviour. The families of Juvenile delinquents often are characterised by lax and ineffective discipline, low levels of affection and high levels of family conflict, physical abuse, severe parental punishment and neglect. The parents and siblings of Juvenile delinquents frequently have engaged in antisocial, deviant or criminal behaviour themselves. Over the years, many different approaches have been tried in an effort to prevent delinquent behaviour from starting or to D 1207 3 P.T.O. reduce delinquent behaviour once it appears. One type of approach focuses on the individual offender. Such programmes may provide training in moral reasoning, social skills training, problem-solving skills training, or a combination of these. In some cases, these programmes have the positive effect of reducing subsequent antisocial or delinquent behaviour for short-terms only. Another approach tries to deal with various social systems, such as the family, peer groups, school or community. These broader, multisystems approaches appear to be more successful in reducing problem behaviours and improving family relations of delinquent adolescents. One other promising approach starts with the very young child and is aimed at promising a host of positive child outcomes, not just delinquency prevention. To summarise, if a young child is provided with a pleasant, conducive family environment, supportive community and encouraging society which foster his naturing and nurturing then delinquency can be erased from societal dictionary.
