To do so, he must shed his preconceptions, trying to look a new at the migration patterns themselves, however familiar some may be. Whenever possible the patterns should be matched with the surviving record of past cultural circulation. An underlying order is first discernible in the pervasive Indianness of the phenomena observed, however diverse they may be. Indian civilization is a reality that expresses itself in the landscape. There is the complex socio-spatial order of its villages with their many castes, the close spacing of settlements, the unique ecological integration of man, land and cattle, the restraint toward nature that is a consequence of ethics of non-violence and many subtle conformations that overlie the obvious contrasts of hill and plain, desert, jungle, and rain forest. The distinctiveness of Indian population and its civilization is commonly explained as the consequence of a virtual closure by mountain and sea of the rhomboidal South Asian space, although the conventional interpretation perhaps fails to emphasize enough dynamics of internal circulation over many centuries, the slow churning of the ocean of Indian life, which has created and sustained the underlying unity and the spread of Indian culture and religious roots to the far-east. The same tendency to neglect the significance of circulation also gives a somewhat static, deterministic cast to the primary spatial order into which the cultural data are put by many demographers and among others the anthropologists, the organization in a mosaic of regions. Countering this tendency, recent work by some historians and social scientists has begun to examine the processes whereby the regional pattern of language, culture and population dynamics has emerged, sometimes to be followed by political and economic integration of dimly recognized cultural history and by the appearance of a firmer popular consciousness of region.
