(200) (4) S J 1507 2 SECTION - I U I Note : This section contains five (5) questions based on the following paragraph. Each question should be answered in about thirty (30) words and each carries five (5) marks. (5x5=25 marks) ( 5) (30) ( 5) (5x5=25 ) Read the given para carefully and answer the following questions in the light of its content : What is the carrying capacity of human ecosystems for people ? Very simply, we do not know. It is clear that society has become so sophisticated that the carrying capacity is considerably more than it was in hunter-gatherer days. It is not even clear, however, that the current population of the earth can be maintained over a long time, and there are people who believe that many countries have badly overshot their carrying capacity. On the other hand, there are those who believe that the earth can support many times its current population. In the long run the sustainable population of an advanced industrial society (or for any society for that matter) will reflect the weakest part of the ecosystem upon which it is based. We know a great deal about the environment, about management, and about setting goals and strategies for society, but we know very little about how they operate together and about the mechanisms by which each limits the others. Perhaps we can be optimistic. Society s track record so far is not unblemished, but it is not so bad. Modern society appears to be thriving and the system seems to work. But nobody really knows why. h ? - S C , S C J 1507 3 P.T.O. Q , Q , l ( ) h , , _ - R h 1. How did the society improve its carrying capacity compared to hunter-gatherer days ? ( ) ? J 1507 4 2.
