(5x5=25 marks) ( 5) (30) ( 5) (5x5=25 ) Read the passage below and answer questions 1 to 5 upto 30 words for each answer. When a person experiences an emotion, there is an arousal created by the sympathetic nervous system. The heart rate increases, breathing becomes more rapid, mouth may become dry and the pupils dilate. Although facial expressions do differ between various emotional responses, emotions are difficult to distinguish from one another on the basis of outward bodily reactions alone. In fact it is quite easy to mistake a person who is actually afraid of or angry as being aroused if the person s face is not clearly visible, which can lead to much miscommunication and misunderstanding. However, in the laboratory using devices to measure the heart rate, blood pressure and skin temperature, researchers have reported that different emotions are associated with different physiological reactions. Fear is associated with decrease in skin temperature whereas anger is associated with an increase in skin temperature as well as greater increase in blood pressure. Several parts of the brain are involved in emotions. One very important part is amygdala, a small area located within the limbic system on each side of the brain. It is associated with fears in both animals as well as humans and is also involved in facial expression of human emotions. Researches have also reported that negative feelings such as sadness, anxiety and depression seems to be a function of primarily left hemisphere of the brain. When anxiety and depression were high, so was the activity on the left side of the brain. But when anxiety and depression were reduced, activity levels dropped in the left hemisphere and increased in the right hemisphere. U U 1 5 U Q , m U N , , U U D 0408 3 P.T.O.
