Guilford (1950) translated into reality Burnham s (1872) views of creative vs. productive imagination by throwing a challenge before the psychologists, educationist and others to look beyond the boundaries of I.Q. if we are to fathom the domain of creativity. Catherine Cox Miles (1960) too advocated that intelligence alone is not the parameter of human ability and we should find an alternative of it. Guilford continued to work on creativity and introduced the theory of Structure of Intellect Model (SI) including divergent and convergent thinking abilities. Galton had earlier spoken of individual differences based on intellectual ability. The concept of creative mind was also noted by Spearman who was inspired by L.L. Thurston s view of new intellectual areas. Thus intelligence was the concept of convergent thinking requiring right or wrong answer. Explaining creativity Taylor described fluency and versatility of ideas as creative thinking or creativity. The nature of creativity was discussed by several authors who made significant contributions in the area of creativity. Creativity is some thing original, novel, unique and different from others. Creativity is also explained in terms of traits. Gradually definitions of creativity came in terms of process, press and product. Several criteria were set for the growth of creativity. These are interaction (man vs. environment-1), openness to experience, Test criteria, permissiveness etc. Many studies indicated that poor and rich environmental conditions are important factors that influence the development of creative potential. Creativity comprises intelligence plus other things, whatever these other things may be. According to the theory, three aspects of intelligence are key for creativity; synthetic, analytical, and practical abilities. D 0407 3 P.T.O. (1872) . . U (1950) , S U U U . .
