Since future forms of culture will be shaped by decisions humans have yet to make, they cannot be predicted with any accuracy. Thus, instead of trying to foretell the future, a number of anthropologists are attempting to gain a better understanding of the existing world situation so that decisions may be made intelligently. Anthropologists are especially well suited for this, owing to their experience at seeing things in context, their long-term historical perspective, their ability to recognize culture bound biases, and their familiarity with cultural alternatives. However humanity changes biologically, culture remains the chief means by which humans try to solve their problems of existence. Some anthropologists are concerned that there is a trend for the problems to outstrip any culture s ability to find solutions. Rapid developments in communication, transportation, J 0707 3 P.T.O. and world trade, some believe, will link people together to the point that a single world culture will result. Their thinking is that such a homogenized superculture would offer fewer chances for conflict between peoples than in the past. Most anthropologists are skeptical of such an argument, in view of the recent tendency for ethnic groups to reassert their own distinctive identities and in view of the persistence of traditional ways of thinking about oneself and others, even in the face of massive changes in other aspects of culture. Anthropologists also are concerned about peoples tendency to treat many of the world s traditional societies as obsolete when they appear to stand in the way of development. , 30 S M c m c , c S # h S , S h- S , Q M , c S S S , S S L , J 0707 4 S M S - - (ethnic groups) S , , S # (absolute) 1.
