(200) (4) S D 0705 2 SECTION - I U I Note : This section contains five (5) questions based on the following paragraph. Each question should be answered in about thirty (30) words and each carries five (5) marks. (5x5=25 marks) (5) (5x5=25 ) (30) (5) Read the following paragraph carefully and answer all the questions given below. Answers should not exceed 30 words in each case. The study of man involves much more than an attempt to find out as much as possible about the structure and operation of his body. We are highly social and highly imaginative creatures. As the science of anthropology has grown, different scholars have become interested in different aspects of the field. Some have concerned themselves especially with problems concerning language, and the subdiscipline of linguistics has arisen. Others have specialized in studies of social structure, of culture history, of the diverse economic, religious, or political systems which are found among different peoples. Cultural anthropology, embracing all such studies, has become the focal point about which all other anthropological specialties are arranged. Still other scholars attempt to add time-depth to the study of man by engaging in archaeological investigations. It should be noted that each field of interest which has been mentioned impinges upon some other discipline. This is characteristic of anthropology. Historians, sociologists, psychologists, and economists are among the many scholars whose interests overlap those of anthropologists. It is the emphasis upon culture as a unifying theme which makes anthropology one discipline rather than many. Physical anthropology is properly included within the field of anthropology as a whole, rather than being simply an allied subject, because it, too, is concerned primarily with human culture. Historically, medical men, geneticists, paleontologists, and anatomists have made great contributions to knowledge in physical anthropology, just as scholars in the behavioral sciences have contributed to other aspects of the field in general. But physical anthropology is more than the study of human biology, or of human evolution, or of human genetics. It is impossible to chop mankind, or the study of mankind, into separate fragments. The fact that man is a social being is inseparable fragments. The fact that man is a social being is inseparable from the fact that he is a biological organism. l 30 , c , , m D 0705 3 P.T.O.
