Leakey Read the following text and choose/pick the correct answer in each of the following questions (46 50) : In some societies, the bride s family rather than the groom s family gives goods of value. These gifts are given to the newly married couple and/or to the husband s kin prior to or upon the marriage. This type of exchange is called dowry. Dowries are prevalent in some patriarchal cultures that stress the prestige of men and their families. In theory, dowries are a kind of insurance that protects the interests of a wife in a patrilineal and patriarchal society. In practice, however, dowry wealth is often appropriated by the husband and his family. Dowry was the traditional marital exchange in India. A woman s family had to present wealth in jewelry, fine cloth and money to the husband s family before the marriage took place. The amount of wealth given was an indication of both the bride s status and the esteem of the husband s kin. Wealthy parents gave a lot of property, but even poor families tried to collect as many valuables as they could so as not to shame their daughter and themselves. The economic burden of dowry contributed to a preference for sons over daughters because girls were a financial liability whereas boys brought in dowry wealth when they married. Thus, the custom of dowry contributed to female infanticide and the neglect of the health of daughters in India and Bangladesh. However, dowry was not the only factor involved in preferences for sons and the consequences of such preferences. Rather, a constellation of behaviours and attitudes place value on men and undermine the worth of women : kinship based on patrilineal descent and inheritance, subsistence strategies emphasizing intensive agriculture done primarily by men, and male control over land. Although outlawed by the Dowry Prohibition Act (1961, amended in 1984 and 1986), a husband s family often still demands specific amounts of cash or goods to contract a marriage Young men of high status, good education, and favourable employment prospects command large sums. Dowry demands are often made after a marriage is contracted and even after a wedding. Paper-II 20 J-0710 45. I II : I II ( ) ( ) : I. 1. . . II. : 2. . . III. 3.
