ANTHROPOLOGY PAPER III - III NOTE : This paper is of two hundred (200) marks containing four (4) sections. Candidates are required to attempt the questions contained in these sections according to the detailed instructions given therein. (200) (4) S D 0708 2 SECTION - I U I Note : This section contains five (5) questions based on the following paragraph. Each question should be answered in about thirty (30) words and each carries five (5) marks. (5x5=25 marks) (5) (30) (5) (5x5=25 ) Read the following paragraph carefully and answer all the questions given below. Answer should not exceed 30 words : Towards the close of his career, Earnest Hooton, a famous physical anthropologist, revised one specific element in the definition of race with which he had worked for thirty years. Originally he had defined a race as a large population which, though showing individual variation, tended to be alike in physique and physiology. The common physical traits were assumed to be the result of shared heredity and were supposed to be primarily non-adaptive. It is the last phrase that Hooton finally removed from his definition of race, though not all of his colleagues have since followed suit. A non-adaptive trait is one which is absolutely neutral under all practical conditions which its bearer may meet. It neither advances the organism s chances to live and reproduce nor does it diminish them. Definitions of race that utilize this concept do so in order to stabilize their categories: if the criteria are not subject to external influence, they are relatively immune to change. The resulting racial categories are rigid and immobile: it is not accidental that they reflect certain contemporary racist views. Political and ethical questions to the side, however, we note that the static concept of race based upon non-adaptive characters has two very great weaknesses. First, it places the biological classification of human varieties in limbo, cut off from the main stream of evolution and its processes and therefore detached from the main stream of modern science, Second, many of the classically accepted non-adaptive traits have been reexamined and now are believed to be adaptive in a variety of subtle ways. *carleton S. Coon, Climate and Race, from Harlow Shapley (editor) Climatic change (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1954), pp. 13-34. Reprinted by permission of the author and the President and Fellows of Harvard College. The problem of the causal relations between adaption and the existence of human races is still poorly explored and controversial. The author of the following selection has never been adverse to controversy and sets down his hypotheses and speculations in the context of a broad knowledge of the subject.
