Vitreous humour and maintaining the shape of the eyeball. 1 1 1 1 1 (c) (i) Cerebrum : It is the seat of mental abilities like thinking, memory, reasoning, perception etc. where midbrain relays motor impulses from the cerebral cortex to the pons and spinal cord. Electrical signals : Hormones are chemical messanger which have low molecular weight, while electrical signals are related with the nervous control. Astigmatism : Because it is caused due to uneven curvature of the cornea whereas vitamin A deficiency causes Night blindness because rhodopsin which helps to see in dim light is synthesised from vitamin A Diabetes insipidus : This is caused due to the deficiency of pancreatic hormone, insulin. Rest are caused by ihe different pituitary hormone deficiency. Corpus lutcum : It is a structure in female gonad - the ovary whereas motile sperm moves by beating flagellae to enter the ovum where changes occur in the sperm that enables it to fertilize the ovum the process known as capacitation. A.2 This is Pavlov's experiment. In 1920 Ivan Pavlov gave a classic example of conditioned reflex to sound. He observed that the sight and smell of food caused salivation in a hungry dog. He rang a bell first. The dog showed no response. But when he placed food near the dog it started salivating. Next, he simultaneously sounded a bell and placed food in front of the dog, the dog salivated. By repeating this process a number of times, a time came when the dog started salivating to the mere sounding of the bell (food was not provided) as the dog learnt to correlate the bell with food. So the bell substituted for the site of food as a stimulus to induce salivation. Here the sound of bell was the stimulus and salivation was the conditioned response. 5 T15 PIA 006 Turn over ... 3 ... Set A A.3 (i) Thyroid gland. (ii) 1. Larynx 2. Thyroid gland 3. Trachea (iii) It secretes two hormones thyroxine and calcitonin. (iv) The gland is located infront of the neck, below the larynx. A.4 (a) (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (b) (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) 5 The experimental set up is to demonstrate the phenomenon of transpiration. Take a well watered potted plant. Cover the pot with polythene bag and tie the mouth of the bag to prevent water vapours from escaping from the bag. Drops of water appear on the inner surface of the polythene bag. It is proved by the above experiment that water drops are the condensed water vapours produced transpiration. For control, set up a similar experiment without the plant. It is observed after some time that there are no water drops seen in the control set-up. Sensory neuron : Transmit impulses from receptors to brain. Motor neuron : Carry messages or instructions from the brain and spinal cord. Polygenic trait : Some traits are determined by the combined effect of more than one pair of genes. Intermediate expression : Apparent blending can occur in the phenotype when there is incomplete dominance resulting in intermediate expression of a trait in heterozygous individuals. Bivalent : It refers to a pair of chromosomes when they pair up during meiosis. Chiasmata : It refers to that area where crossing over has taken place during prophase of meiosis. Telocentric : It is a rod shaped chromosome having centromere at the proximal end. Metacentric : Chromosome having the centromere at the centre and forming two equal arms. Dendrite : Most neurons give off a number of short branching processes called dendrites. Axon : One of the processes arising from neuron is very long having only neurofibrils is called the axon. (ii) Transpiration is a physiological process of loss of water in the form of water vapour from the internal tissues of plants, through the aerial parts of the plants. (iii) Water vapour condensed on the inner wall of the bell jar is an evidence of transpiration. (iv) (a) A well-watered potted plant where the pot is wrapped with a polythene sheet and firmly tied uroum the stem. (b) The base of the bell jar is sealed with vaseline. (v) A control experiment is a similar set-up but without a plant. [5] A.7 (a) In the first meiotic division, the reduction in chromosome number takes place. Here, the number of chromosomes is reduced to half. Thus, it is called reduction division. (b) Green plants produce food by the process of photosynthesis by utilising sun s energy. These plants are eaten up by herbivores which are in turn eaten up by carnivores like lion. Thus the energy in the lion is said to be indirectly coming from the sun as photosynthesis is the only process by which food can be produced. (c) The thyroid gland regulates the body metabolism, by causing an increase in basal metabolic rate which raise the body temperature. With advancing age, the activity of thyroid glands slows down and body heat productin is lowered. That is why older people tend to feel more cold than youngsters. (d) Under-activity of the thyroid results in a swelling called 'Goitre' in the throat. It is more common in the hilly regions of India as the soil there is deficient in Iodine. Thus, Iodised salt is the best remedy for iodine deficiency. That is the reason why the Government has made it mandatory for the salt manufacturers to supply iodised salt. (e) The amnion, a sac filled with amnion fluid, develops round the embryo during gestation period. The fluid acts as a cushion for the embryo and protects it from machenical jerks, and also prevents sticking of the foetus to the amnion. [10] T15 PIA 006 Turn over
