This time is to be spent in reading the question paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. This paper consists of 7 printed pages Attempt all questions from Section I and any four questions from Section II The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ] Section I (40 Marks) Attempt all questions from this section Question 1 (a) Define moment of couple. Write its S.I unit. [2] (b) State any two difference between work and power. [2] (c) A pair of scissors is used to cut a piece of a cloth by keeping it at a [2] distance 8.0 cm from its rivet and applying an effort of 10 kgf by fingers at a distance 2.0 cm from the rivet. Find: (i) the mechanical advantage of scissors (ii) the load offered by the cloth. (d) In which conditions will the light ray moving from liquid to glass passes straight without bending? Will the glass be visible then? [2] (e) Complete following sentence: If half part of a convex lens is covered the focal length ___________ and intensity of the image________. [2] Question 2 (a) (i) What will be the change in specific resistance of the wire if it is stretched to double of its original length? (ii) Name the S.I unit of specific resistance. [2] (b) Arrange the following as per the sequence they are connected in live wire: ELCB, kWh meter, MCB, 50 A fuse. [2] (c) (i) Which type of electromagnet is commonly used in relay? (ii) Why d.c source is preferable to magnetise the electromagnets? Calculate the specific heat capacity of the liquid. (ii)The given diagram represents the forces acting on a body in a circular motion. A and B represents two forces which among them is fictitious force? [2] (b) A simple pendulum while oscillating rises to a maximum vertical height 5cm from its rest position when it reaches to its extreme position on one side. If mass of the bob of the simple pendulum of 500g (g= 10 ms-2), find (i) Total energy of the simple pendulum at any instant while oscillating. (ii) Velocity of the bob at its mean position. [2] (c) Select the correct statement/statements: (i) The velocity ratio of a single fixed pulley is always more than 1. (ii) The velocity ratio of a single movable pulley is always equal to 2. (iii)The velocity ratio of a block and tackle system is always equal to the number of strands of the tackle supporting the load. (iv) A single movable pulley is a speed gainer. Will the plant appear shorter or taller than its actual height? Draw a ray diagram to support your answer. [3] (b)(i) What do you mean by power of lens. (ii) Name the S.I unit of power of lens. (iii) Which has more power, thick or thin lens. [3] (c) A lens forms an image 16 cm long of an object 4 cm long kept at a distance 6 cm from the lens. The object and the image are on the same side of lens. (i) Name the type of lens. (ii) What is the nature of image? (iii) What will be the position of image? (iv) Determine the focal length of lens. [4] Question 7 (a) Find the equivalent resistance between A and B in the given circuit. [3] (b) The diagram shows three pin socket marked 1, 2 and 3. (i) Identify and name the holes 1, 2 and 3. (ii) Is it recommended to have all the holes in the socket of same diameter? Justify your answer. [3] (c) (i) Draw neat and labelled diagram of d.c motor. (ii) State the function of split ring commutator. If substances X and Y are liquids then (i) Which one would be more useful in car radiators and why (ii) Identify the better conductor in X and Y. [3] (b) A piece of iron of mass 0.1 kg is kept inside a furnace for a long time and then put in a calorimeter of mass 10 g containing 240 g of water at 20 C. The mixture attains an equilibrium temperature of 60 C. Find the temperature of the iron piece. Specific heat capacity of iron = 470 J kg 1 C 1. [3] (c) (i) In which case the specific latent heat of freezing is different from specific latent heat of fusion? (ii) Which has more heat content, 1 g of water at 0oC 1 or g of ice at 0oC? (iii) What is the difference in heat energy possessed by 1 g of water and 1 g of ice at 0oC? (iv) Which form of energy increases on supplying heat energy during change of phase. [4] Question 9 (a) (i) What are the two properties of metals used to stop particles for the production of X-rays. (ii) How is particles different from cathode rays? [3] (b) Write any three advantages of using nuclear fusion over nuclear fission for yielding electricity. [3] (c) (i) In a radioactive decay of nucleus , mass number of parent nucleus reduces by 4 and number of neutrons reduces by 3. Calculate the number of and particles emitted in the process. (ii) What does the position of centre of gravity of the body depends upon? (iii) A uniform flat circular rim is balanced on a sharp vertical nail by supporting it at point A, as shown in figure. Which position in 1, 2, 3 and 4 is most likely to be a centre of gravity of the rim. Mark in the diagram the angle wherever necessary. [3] (c) On a winter day the temperature of the tap water is 20 C whereas the room temperature is 5 C. Water is stored in a tank of capacity 0.5 m3 for household use. If it were possible to use the heat liberated by the water to lift a 10 kg mass vertically, how high can it be lifted as the water comes to the room temperature?
