Set-A ICSE X MAHESH TUTORIALS I.C.S.E. SUBJECT : ENGLISH (PAPER 1) Exam No. : MT/ICSE/PRELIM-II-SET -A-004 Marks : 80 Time : 2 hrs. Model Answer Paper SECTION A A.1 (a) Persons I Like and Dislike I am sociable by nature. I like to meet different persons and talk to them. Some of them I am really fond of, others I dislike. Like others, I also like those people who are like me sincere, honest, hard-working and frank. I dislike those who are hypocrites, selfish, idle and dishonest. The person I like the most in my life is my grandfather. We are both attached to each other emotionally. He has always impressed me with his simple and high life. He does not like to mince words. He calls a spade a spade. He believes in hard work and honesty. He tells me how he spurned many tempting offers and bribes when he was an officer. He says that he was not in good books of his superiors for this fault. Many a time he had to face threats and transfers to remote, wild areas. But he stuck to his principles. Whenever I hear him relate these stories with a unique light in his eyes, I admire him and make a silent vow to follow him. Another person I like in my life is an unknown, unrelated person. He is a saint, Swami Mool Chand. He lives in a cottage near the park of his colony. Many persons come to him and seek his blessings. He administers sound, practical advice to whoever comes to him. He advises everyone to believe in whatever god he believes, do the right, and everything right will follow. I have often gone to see him. He talks to me fondly, and gives me no advice. What I like in him is his fondness for the flute. He plays it so sweetly that I feel transported to another world. Whenever I go to him, I ask him to play the flute for me. Among the persons whom I dislike the most are one of our neighbours and one of my classmates. Ramesh Lal is our immediate neighbour. He is a revenue official in a court. He is arrogant, corrupt and foul-mouthed. He is a hard drunkard. He comes home late, dead drunk, speaks loudly and disturb the whole neighbourhood. He often beats his wife. He has quarrelled with father many a times. Whenever I happen to meet him I find him shabby and stinking. I try to avoid him. Satinder is another person whom I dislike. He is my classmate. He is the son of a very rich landlord. He is always ill-dressed and ill-mannered. He commits unpardonable mischiefs in every class. No teacher dares to confront him. Once he snatched a sandwich from my hand, ate it and giggled away as if he had done a great thing. Not knowing how to deal with him, I prefer to shun him. Despite such odd, dislikeable persons there are many who attract me. I find life interesting because of these persons. [25] (b) We used to live in a small, remote village. My father was in the railways. He would often take us to distant towns and cities during our holidays. I must be eight then. I am the only son of my parents, and they are very possessive of me. They would take care of all my needs. I was in the village school, doing well. T17 PIIA 004 Turn over
