Question 3: Answer the following: [1+2+2+2+3] (i) If the roots of a plant are not growing in length, which tissue is not active? Meristematic tissues (ii) In a school picnic, students saw a cow feeding its calf with milk. One curious child asked, Why don t birds or reptiles do the same? Mention the class to which cow belongs and explain the special characteristic of this class shown here. Mammals have mammary glands present in females that produce milk to nourish their young ones. (iii) In the experiment shown, a portion of the leaf is covered with black paper. After testing with iodine solution, only the uncovered part of the leaf turns blue-black while the covered part remains brown. Explain why this difference occurs. (iv) (v) The uncovered part of the leaf received sunlight and carried out photosynthesis, producing starch. When treated with iodine, starch turned blue-black. The covered part did not get sunlight, so no photosynthesis took place and no starch was formed, hence remains brown. Differentiate between cartilage and bone on the basis of their function. The rate of photosynthesis would slow down in extremely low temperature because the enzymes required for the process become less active at low temperatures. As a result, the plant produces less glucose, which affects its growth. Why is blood called a connective tissue? Blood is considered as a connective tissue as it connects all systems of the body and transports oxygen, nutrients, and wastes. Samay used a plant with variegated leaves for an experiment on photosynthesis. He tested a leaf with iodine after keeping the plant in sunlight for a few hours. a. Skin- organ b. Skeletal muscles- tissue (iii) Rubeena observed that the money plant in her house needs sunlight to prepare food, while her pet rabbit eats grass. How are their modes of nutrition different with respect to food production? The money plant shows autotrophic nutrition as it makes its own food using sunlight through photosynthesis. The rabbit shows heterotrophic nutrition as it cannot make food and depends on plants for nutrition. Page 5 of 6 (iv) The experimental set-up shown alongside represents a process in plants. Study the same and answer the following questions. a. What is the aim of the experiment? Aim: To show that oxygen is given out during photosynthesis. b. Why is water used in this experiment? Water is used because, hydrilla being an aquatic plant releases oxygen as visible bubbles in water, which makes it easy to observe during the experiment. (v) Observe the given image and answer the questions that follow: a. Identify the given organism. Earthworm b. Name the special organ of excretion present in this organism. Nephridia c. Write one special characteristic feature of this organism with respect to its body structure. Its body is divided into ring-like segments, making it a segmented organism. Question 6: Answer the following. [1+2+2+2+3] (i) In the biology lab, a specimen was shown with dry scaly skin. The teacher also mentioned that this animal lays soft shelled eggs on land. Mention the class to which it belongs. [1] It belongs to the class Reptilia. (ii) Write one important function of the following structures a. Tube feet- Locomotion in echinoderms b. Tentacles- Catching food / Swimming in coelenterates (iii) A setup containing germinating seeds is arranged with a tube containing lime water. After some time, the lime water turns milky. a. What causes the lime water to turn milky? The lime water turns milky because of the release of carbon dioxide gas. b. What is the role of germinating seeds in this setup? The germinating seeds carry out respiration, releasing carbon dioxide as a byproduct, which makes the lime water turn milky. (iv) Shriya accidentally inhales a small insect. She starts coughing to remove it. Which type of epithelial tissue lines her respiratory tract, and how does it help expel foreign particles? The ciliated epithelium lines the respiratory tract. It cilia keeps lashing and move the substance in its contact. (v) A boy runs a 400-meter race and complains of pain in his leg muscles. The doctor explains that his muscles temporarily underwent anaerobic respiration. a. Name the by-product formed in his muscles due to this process. The by-product formed in his muscles is lactic acid. b. How is anaerobic respiration different from aerobic respiration in terms of energy release? Anaerobic respiration releases very little energy (2 ATP).
