PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION 2019 GEOGRAPHY Grade : 10 Max. Marks : 80 Date : 13th January 2020 Time : 2 Hours ______________________________________________________________________________ Answers to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the question paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. Answer all questions in Section A and any Five from Section B The intended marks for question or parts of the questions are given in brackets [ ] To be supplied with this paper: Survey of India Map Sheet No 45 D/7 T18 502 ______________________________________________________________________________ Note: i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. Do not write or mark on the topographical map. In all Map Work, by a wise use of arrows to indicate positions of countries, cities and other insertions that you made, you will be able to avoid overcrowding parts of the map. The map given at the beginning of this question paper must be fastened with your answer booklet. The extract of the Survey of India Map Sheet No 45 D/7 T18 502 must not be taken out of the examination hall. It must be handed over to the Supervising Examiner on the completion of the paper. All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as the rest of the answer. All sub-sections of each question must be answered in correct order. This paper consists of 7 printed pages and one outline map. Page 1 of 8 SECTION A [30 MARKS] Attempt all question from this section QUESTION 1 [20 MARKS] Study the given map extract of the India, No 45 D/7 and answer the following questions: a. Why is the linear scale widely used? What is the statement scale of this map? [2] b. Give the six figure grid reading of the following: [2] (i) Spot height 399 south of northing 84. (ii) Prominent surveyed tree 181 located east of Juvol. c. Name any two perennial sources of water in the area represented. [2] d. What is the drainage pattern in the following grids? [2] (i) 9284 (ii) 9489 e. What do you understand by the following : (i) Black irregular lines in grid 9584. (ii) Annual fair (Feb) in grid 9188 [2] f. What inference can be drawn about the occupation of the people of Juvol? Justify your answer with a suitable reason. [2] g. Is the tank in 9586 natural? Give a reason for your answer. [2] h. Measure the distance for the following : [2] (i) Direct distance between Spot height 522 (9284) and triangulated height 268 (9483). (ii) Indirect distance between Arniwada (9481) to Juvol (9282) along the cart track. i. Differentiate between the brown broken circle in 9584 and the brown circular lines in 9585. [2] j. What is the general slope of the land? Give a reason to support your answer. Name a source of energy that will dominate in the 21st Century and justify your statement. If it has to position itself to No.1, suggest a few measures that the industry must consider. [3] (d) How are mini steel plants different from the integrated steel plants? Give three points of difference. [3] QUESTION 10 [10 MARKS] (a) List any two advantages of airways over railways. [2] (b) Name two ship yards located on the east coast of India. [2] (c) (i) Give two reasons why peninsular rivers are not ideal for navigation. [2] (ii) Why is Chennai port not accessible for cruise liners and oil tankers during the months of October, November and December. [1] (d) Give reasons: [3] (i) North-Eastern states do not have good roads (ii) Air transport is relatively expensive (iii) Roadways are the most common mode of transport in hilly region.
