Traditional Aboriginal owners and conservationists say they have taken the action to stop logging because of the high cultural and environmental values of Mission State Forest. Traditional owners and Moree Aboriginal Land Council have called on the State Government to protect Mission and six other State forests in the Terry Hie Hie area by declaring them a new Aboriginal-owned national park. Mission State Forest is adjacent to Aboriginal-owned land and is rich in cultural heritage. Senior traditional owner Lou Swan said: This area is very special to all those people whose ancestors come from Terry Hie Hie. Our people are buried here and we have to look after it. The Government should stop the logging and work with us to make a new Aboriginal national park that will be a wonderful place for all people. OR 12 20 Marks Question 9 Heritage and Identity (30 marks) (a) Using Source D and your own knowledge, discuss TWO contemporary expressions of Aboriginal peoples heritage and identity and how these expressions are portrayed by the media. 10 Source D Black Chick Talking Dee Porter There are not many people in the world who can lay claim to being an actor, singer, writer, film-maker, and director but Leah Purcell can. nine Aboriginal women from different walks of life. Rather than try to unveil any of their secrets or complexities, Leah says she just let their stories unfold. A proud Goa-Gungarri-Wakka Wakka Murri woman, Leah was born in the Queensland town of Murgon. Each story weaves a picture of how that individual from a former Miss Australia to a prison warden formed their identity through their ties to the land and their culture. In 1995, she moved to Sydney to become the first presenter of the Red Music Channel on Galaxy Pay TV. This was closely followed by parts in Police Rescue and Fallen Angels, the latter earning her a Best Actress nomination by the Australian Film Industry. Black Chicks Talking tells the stories of Leah says that, through her work, her aim is to encourage Indigenous people to embrace their identity, and to create greater understanding in the wider community that may never have spoken to a black person .
