In 1994, the UN General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World s Indigenous Peoples (9 August) should be observed every year during the International Decade of the World s Indigenous Peoples. A Second International Decade commenced on 1 January 2006, with a goal to further strengthen international cooperation for solving problems faced by indigenous people in areas such as: culture, education, health, human rights, the environment, and social and economic development. To achieve these goals indigenous people must be fully involved in the formation, decision-making, implementation and evaluation processes on laws, policies, resources and projects which affect us; this is our right, said Mr Calma.
