KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA SANGATHAN, CHENNAI REGION CLASS XII PRE-BOARD EXAMINATION-2014-15 Subject : English (Core) Time Allotted : 3 Hours Max Marks : 100 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: 1. This paper is divided into three Sections: A, B and C. All the sections are compulsory. 2. Separate instructions are given with each section and questions, wherever necessary. Read these instructions very carefully and follow them faithfully. 3. Do not exceed the prescribed word limit while answering the questions. SECTION A: READING 30 MARKS 1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: 12 marks 1. Why should I meet young students in particular? Seeking the answer I wentback to my student days. From the island of Rameswaram, what a greatjourney it s been! Looking back it all seems quite incredible. 2. What was it that made it possible? Hard work? Ambition? Many things cometo my mind. I feel the most important thing was that I always assessed myworth by the value of my contribution. The fundamental thing is that you mustknow that you deserve the good things of life, the benefits that God bestows.Unless our students and young believe that they are worthy of being citizensof a developed India, how will they ever be responsible and enlightenedcitizens? 3. There is nothing mysterious about the abundance in developed nations. Thehistoric fact is that the people of these nations - the G8 as they are called -believed over many generations that they must live a good life in a strong andprosperous nation. The reality became aligned with their aspirations. 4. I do not think that abundance and spirituality are mutually exclusive or that itis wrong to desire material things. For instance, while I personally cherish a life with minimum of possessions, I admire abundance, for it brings along withit security and confidence, and these eventually help preserve our freedom.Nature too does not do anything by half measures, as you will see if you lookaround you. Go to a garden. In season, there is a profusion of flowers. Orlook up. The universe stretches into infinitude, vast beyond belief. 5. All that we see in the world is an embodiment of energy. We are a part of thecosmic energy too, as Sri Aurobindo says. Therefore when we begin toappreciate that spirit and matter are both part of existence, are in harmonywith each other, we shall realize that it is wrong to feel that it is somehowshameful or non-spiritual to desire material things. 6. Yet, this is what we are often led to believe. Certainly there is nothing wrongwith an attitude of making do with the minimum, in leading a life of asceticism. It has to be a matter of choice. You follow such a lifestyle because it answersa need that arises from deep within you. However, making a virtue of sacrificeand what is forced upon you to celebrate suffering - is a different thingaltogether. 1 7. This was the basis of my decision to contact our young. To know their dreamsand tell them that it is perfectly all right to dream of a good life, an abundantlife, a life full of pleasures and comforts, and work for that golden era. Whateveryou do must come from the heart, express your spirit, and thereby you willalso spread love and joy around you. 8. My first such meeting took place in a high school in Tripura. It was a gathering of 500 students and teachers. After my talk on the second vision for transforming India into a developed nation, there were a series of questions, two of which I would like to discuss. The first question was: 'Where do we get a role model from, how do you get a role model?' 9. Whether we are aware of it or not, from childhood onwards, through various phases of life, we adopt role models. I said, 'When you are growing up, say till the age of 15, the best role model I can think of would be your father, your mother and your schoolteacher.' They, to my mind, are the people who can impart the best guidance during this period. I turned to the teachers and parents present there and told them what a big responsibility they have. No longer now can I endure the brunt Of the books that lie out on the desks; a full threescore Of several insults of blotted pages, and scrawl Of slovenly work that they have offered me. I am sick, and what on earth is the good of it all? What good to them or me, I cannot see! So, shall I take My last dear fuel of life to heap on my soul And kindle my will to a flame that shall consume Their dross of indifference; and take the toll Of their insults in punishment? I will not! I will not waste my soul and my strength for this. What do I care for all that they do amiss! What is the point of this teaching of mine, and of this Learning of theirs? It all goes down the same abyss. What does it matter to me, if they can write A description of a dog, or if they can't? What is the point? To us both, it is all my aunt! People seem to feel that there is some essential difference between beggars and ordinary "working" men. They are a race apart-outcasts, like criminals and prostitutes. Working men "work," beggars do not "work"; they are parasites, worthless in their very nature. It is taken for granted that a beggar does not "earn" his living, as a bricklayer or a literary critic "earns" his. He is a mere social excrescence, tolerated because we live in a humane age, but essentially despicable. Yet if one looks closely one sees that there is no essential difference between a beggar's livelihood and that of numberless respectable people. Beggars do not work, it is said; but, then, what is work? An accountant works by adding up figures. A beggar works by standing out of doors in all weathers and getting varicose veins, chronic bronchitis, etc. It is a trade like any other; quite useless, of course--but, then, many reputable trades are quite useless. And as a social type a beggar compares well with scores of others. He is honest compared with the sellers of most patent medicines, high-minded compared with a Sunday newspaper proprietor, amiable compared with a hire-purchase tout--in short, a parasite, but a fairly harmless parasite. He seldom extracts more than a bare living from the community, and, what should justify him according to our ethical ideas, he pays for it over and over in suffering. I do not think there is anything about a beggar that sets him in a different class from other people, or gives most modern men the right to despise him. 4 Then the question arises, Why are beggars despised?--for they are despised, universally. I believe it is for the simple reason that they fail to earn a decent living. In practice nobody cares whether work is useful or useless, productive or parasitic; the sole thing demanded is that it shall be profitable. In all the modem talk about energy, efficiency, social service and the rest of it, what meaning is there except "Get money, get it legally, and get a lot of it"? Money has become the grand test of virtue. By this test beggars fail, and for this they are despised. If one could earn even ten pounds a week at begging, it would become a respectable profession immediately. A beggar, looked at realistically, is simply a businessman, getting his living, like other businessmen, in the way that comes to hand. He has not, more than most modern people, sold his honour; he has merely made the mistake of choosing a trade at which it is impossible to grow rich. by George Orwell a.
