a) Scene takes place in Portia s house in Belmont. Noble prince is Prince of Aaragon. Portia calls him noble as it is a polite way of addressing the prince.?? b) Noble prince is bound by oath to do three things. He can never tell anyone which box he chose. If he chose the wrong box he has to leave immediately and can never propose marriage for the rest of his life c) Many could mean that most people are fools and chose whatever is flashy. They don t go beyond whatever their eyes see or bother to find what s on the inside and pays attention only to the outside. The prince won t choose what many men desire because he won t jump on the bandwagon and include himself with the whole crude population. d) It means if one can earn their honour only by merit and not by corrupt practices, there will not be many important men. e) Noble prince chooses the silver casket. The inscription on the caket is Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves . He assumes that he deserves the very best & hence chooses the silver casket. a) Fawning publican means servile Roman tax collector. Publican is a term of contempt and loathing in the mouth of a Jew. Shylock hates Antonio as he is a Christian and lends money without interest which lowers the interest rate in Venice. Shylock knows that Antonio hates him and complains about him Rialto. b) Jacob was the grandson of Abraham, founder of Jewish race and Laban was his uncle. Jacob, son of Issac went to serve under his uncle Laban. An agreement was made between Laban and Jacob that Jacob would receive for his services lambs which were born with spots or stripes. During the breeding season, Jacob places wooden rods in such a position that the shadow of rods could fall on the sheep. By this means, Jacob is said to have influenced the sheep so much that almost all the lambs were born spotted or striped and thus became the property of Jacob. c) Antonio describes Shylock as a devil who can quote scripture for his own use. Though he looks like a good apple, he is rotten at the core. d) If Antonio does not repay the sum of money fixed in the contract in 3 months time, at the place they name, a pound of flesh will be taken out of Antonio s body from the part which Shylock likes as penalty. Antonio expects to earn more than three times the bond money from his investments in 2 month s time. Hence he sees no danger in signing the bond. Antonio is very optimistic about his business ventures and is ready to take risk for his friend. f) Shylock states that he is sworn by holy Sabbath to see the penalty as per the contract. If the Duke refuses to allow him to do so, Venice s charter and freedom re endangered. He cannot give an exact reason for his hate and loathing for Antonio but is determined to extract the pound of flesh as penalty. i) Shylock was invited for supper by Bassanio. Though Shylock hates Christian and is not inclined to attend the dinner, he decides to have the meal at the expense of a prodigal Christian. Launcelot has come to invite him. ai) Bassanio has been called as the prodigal Christian. Bassanio is called prodigal as he is spendthrift. The reference is to the story of prodigal son in Bible. iii) Shylock asks Jessica to lock and guard his house. He instructs Jessica not to climb up the windows to watch the masquerade and to keep the windows closed. iv) a) Loath to go means hate to go . Shylock is very reluctant to go for the dinner to a Christian s house. b) This means there is some evil being plotted against his peace of mind. v) Shylock s fear is justified as his daughter Jessica elopes with Lorenzo who is a Christian taking gold and jewels while fleeing. This incident really fuels Shylock s rage and intensifies his hatred for Christians and his desire for revenge. He is consoled somewhat on hearing that Antonio has lost all his ships and out of hatred for him, he claims the bond. i. Antonio is the speaker if these lines. He is in the Venetian court of law . Antonio had defaulted on the loan payment to Shylock and Shylock wants to invoke penalty as per the contract ii. a) tainted weather means diseased ram c) meetest for death means most suitable to die d) be employed means be occupied iii. Antonio refers himself as the sick sheep in the flock. He says that the weakest fruit drops to the ground first, so let him drop instead of Bassanio. Speaker is talking to Bassanio. Bassanio offers himself to be the subject of the penalty. Antonio replies that he is like a diseased ram that is most suitable to die. Bassanio should go on living and better be occupied with writing Antonio s epitaph than pleading with Shylock for mercy. Bassanio is Antonio s most intimate friend and Antonio puts his life at stake for the friendship. Bassanio is also willing to give up his life to save his friend. iv. Portia disguised as a lawyer argues that the contract specifies only pound of flesh. So if even one drop of blood is shed while taking the flesh, state of Venice should confiscate Shylock s land and property under Venetian law. If cuts exact even a tiniest of fraction of ounce more than one pound of flesh, his property will be confiscated. Throughout the trial, Portia exudes a rare self confidence and deftly saves Antonio from the clutches of Shylock. She comes out as a person who is practical, resourceful and capable of taking quick decision. i) ii) iii) iv) v) Shylock is speaking to the duke of Venice in Venice court of law. Shylock is referring to the pound of flesh he can extract from Antonio as per the penalty terms in the contract which he is concerned may be denied by Duke. Shylock states that if Duke refuses the penalty, Venice s charter and its freedom is endangered. Carrion flesh means rotten flesh . Shylock says that he would go for a pound of decaying flesh than 3000 ducats as he feels like it. It is like paying 10000 ducats to exterminate a rat in house. Shylock cannot give a reason and won t give a reason for the feeling of hatred he has for Antonio Some men don t like roast pigs, others go crazy if they see a cat and others can t help urinating when they hear bagpipes. There is no sense trying to explain people s likes and dislikes. Listener is the Duke and he thinks Shylock just pretends to be cruel and at the last second will show mercy and pity. Shylock will pity for Antonio s losses and may even waive off part of the principal he owes Shylock. Out of humanity and love, Duke expects Shylock to be kind to Antonio, who has lost all his business. Antonio requests Bassanio not to bother arguing with Shylock. He might as well go stand on beach and ask ocean to be smaller or ask a wolf why he killed the lamb and made its mother cry. It is like asking the pine trees on mountain top to stop waving when there is heavy wind blowing. He might as well do these impossible things than trying to soften the Jewish heart. i) He is Shylock who along with Duke came searching for Bassanio s ship. Lorenzo and Jessica were seen together in a Gondola. The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat. Ship was going to Belmont. ii) Bassanio and Gratiano were there in the ship. Bassanio was sailing to Belmont to woo Portia s hand in marriage. Shylock woke up the Duke as his daughter had eloped with Lorenzo taking with her gold and jewels while fleeing. He wanted to catch his daughter whom he thought was sailing in Bassanio s ship iii) Shylock was outraged and was shouting in the streets for his daughter and the money and jewels she stole while eloping Boys of Venice were having fun mocking Shylock. iv) Jessica s elopement intensified Shylock s hatred for Christians and his desire for revenge. Later when Shylock hears the news v) of Antonio s ship wreck in the sea, he becomes very happy as he could now seek revenge. Salarino met a Frenchman who said that a Venetian ship loaded with treasure was wrecked in the English Channel. Solanio and Salarino are worried that this ship may be of Antonio in which case he would not be able to repay the loan money to Shylock. Antonio has invested all his fortune in business, though he had not invested all his money in one ship or one part of the world. 1. Speaker gives the title merry devil . Jessica liked Launcelot as he used to cheer up the house which was like a hell. 2. New master is Bassanio. Launcelot was working under Shylock who ill-treated him and made him starve. Launcelot wanted to quit working for the Jew and work for Bassanio who may treat him better. 3. Jessica was ashamed to be Shylock s daughter. She consoles herself saying she is only related by blood and not by behavior to Shylock. 4. Jessica wanted to elope with Lorenzo and the letter was details on how Jessica will escape from the house. Letter mentioned how Jessica can get out of the house, the money & jewels she owns and the uniform she has to disguise while fleeing with Lorenzo. 5. Lorenzo s elopement is out of pure love for Jessica. Though, he is not attracted by Jessica s wealth, he does not discourage her from stealing her father s money and jewels. He is a poet at heart, dreaming of love and music and is all praise for Jessica. 1) Shylock is distraught by his daughter s betrayal. Shylock is simultaneously grieved and elated, grieved because his daughter s deceit and elated because the news of Antonio s loss of ships and the debt he owes. Shylock s daughter had eloped with Christian taking money & jewels 2) Salarino brings the news that there is a rumor that Antonio s ship carrying expensive cargo has been ship wrecked in English Channel on the Goodwin Sands. Many ships have sunk there according to rumors. Antonio s financial state depends on the successful return of the ships after the completion of trade. 3) Antonio will not have money to pay back Sherlock s loan on time. Hence called bankrupt. Bad match means bad transaction. Shylock has loaned 3000 ducats and it seems to be a bad transaction as Antonio will not be able to repay the loan on time. 4) Prodigal means spendthrift, waster. Antonio used to lend money without interest and as per Shylock this is being a Spendthrift. The reference is to the story of prodigal son in Bible. 5) If Antonio fails to pay the bond money, Shylock is entitled to extract a pound of flesh from Antonio. Considering the enmity between Antonio & Shylock and the hatred they have for each other, I don t think it was a wise decision for Antonio to borrow money from Shylock. Further, Antonio s ability to repay the loan was completely dependent on his ships on the sea that needed to return back safely. Antonio 1) Scene takes place in a street in Venice. Antonio, Salarino and Salanio are present there. Antonio is melancholic and does not know the reason for his depression. 2) Andrew is a common name for a big ship. Wealthy Andrew means a big ship laden with expensive goods. 3) Every time Salarino sees a sandy hour glass, he would imagine of the ships wrecked on sandbars. 4) The ship if it runs into sand banks and shallow water, will run aground with its top of mast lower than the sides and getting buried on the sand. 5) Salarino would think of dangerous rocks every time he went to church and saw the stones it was made of. If the ship brushed up against rocks like that, its whole of cargo spices would be dumped into sea and silk shipments would fly into roaring water. 1) Lorenzo is talking about poet Ovid. He wrote that great musician Orpheus could make trees, stones and rivers come to him by playing music. There is nothing in the world that can resist music. 2) Music will change the nature of a stubborn person full of rage at least for some time 3) Shakespeare uses music in this scene as a prelude to happy ending. The impassioned dialogues of Lorenzo and Jessica create an atmosphere of music and love. 4) Portia thinks that music sounds much better at night than it does during the day. If the nightingale sang during the day, when every goose is cackling, nobody would think it sang any better than a wren. 5) Lorenzo says that a man who is not moved by the harmonious melodies is fit only for treason, violence and pillage. His soul is dull as night and dark as underworld. This fits Shylock s description. Earlier in the play Shylock instructs his daughter not to climb up and look out of the window when she hears the drums & notes from the masquerade. He wanted her to keep all windows closed so that sounds of foolish displays do not enter his sober house. i) ii) iii) iv) v) Arragon is at Portia s house in Belmont to play the lottery of caskets to win Portia s hand in marriage . It means it would be great if property, ranks, official positions and other honours were earned only by merit and not by corruption. Arragon assumes that he deserves the very best. So he chooses the silver casket with the inscription Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves . Silver stands for conceit, vanity and self deception, all three traits of Arragon s personality. Prince of Morocco is attracted by the gold casket which says Who choseth me shall gain what many men desire . As the whole world desires Portia, he thinks gold casket holds the picture of Portia. Bassanio understands that people are often tricked by outward appearances. He considers the gold casket gaudy and rejects the silver casket as silver is a pale metal that common coins are made of. He chooses the lead casket as it challenges to risk everything one possess. Salerio comes in with a letter from Antonio. Portia asks Bassanio to go with her to the church to get married and then sends Bassanio with money to save his friend. Portia seeks advice from a learned doctor of Law and goes to Venice disguised as a lawyer to argue the case and deftly saves Antonio from Shylock s clutches. i) ii) iii) Lorenzo is at Portia s residence. He had met Salerio on the way who begged him to come along with him to handover the letter from Antonio to Bassanio. The letter carried the bad news about Antonio s arrest for nonpayment of loan taken from Shylock and hence Salerio might have preferred a company to break this bad news to Bassanio. He is referring Portia as Madam. Lorenzo came along with Jessica and Salerio , a messenger from Venice. While Shylock was away at Bassanio s house for dinner, he got Jessica out of the house disguised as a boy. Jessica was ashamed of her disguise and did not want to be the torch bearer where people may see her. Portia says that she has never regretted doing good to others. Friends who spend a lot of time together and really are equally for each other have many traits in common. As Antonio is Bassanio s best friend, saving him is like saving Bassanio, who is like her own soul. She asks Lorenzo to take care of management of the house till Bassanio is back. iv) i) Portia asks Balthazar to take a letter to Padua as fast as he can and hand it over to her cousin Bellario, who is a doctor of law. Antonio is sad and melancholic as the scene opens. Salerio and Solanio suggest that Antonio is worried about his ships in the sea. Solanio comments that if he had such risky business ventures in other countries he also would be sad. Salario comments that Antonio is sad because he is worried about his cargo. Solanio checks if Antonio is in love. When Antonio confirms that he is neither worried about his ships or is in love, Solanio attributes his sadness to not being in good mood. Antonio responds that melancholy is something natural to him. He views the world as a stage where every man has to play a part and his own part is that of a sad man. ii. Gratiano comments that there are men who always look serious. Their faces never move or show any expression like stagnant ponds covered with scum. They are silent and stern, and they think they are wise and deep, important and respectable. When they talk, they think everyone should keep quiet including the barking dogs. The only reason they are considered respectable are because they do not open their mouth. Once they speak, everyone comes to know what fools they are. iii. Bassanio is in love with Portia, a rich heiress of Belmont. In order to present himself as an eligible suitor to Portia, Bassanio needs money. Due to his extravagance, Bassanio had exhausted his fortune and had no money. Antonio has no money in hand to lend, as his fortunes were tied up with his ships in the sea. He promises to help Bassanio take loan from moneylenders in Venice using Antonio s name iv. Antonio does not charge interest on the money he lends. Shylock tells the story of Jacob and Laban to explain to Antonio why he charges interest on the money he lends. He wanted to prove the point that to expand the business one may have to be shrewd. Profit is a blessing as long as you don t steal to get it. v. Count Palatine though young is a very sad and solemn man. He just frowns and doesn t even smile when he hears funny stories. Portia thinks that if he is so sad at the young age, he would be just crying as an old man. Duke of Saxaone s nephew was a young German drunkard. He is pretty awful in the morning when he is sober and gets worse by afternoon when he is drunk. At his best, he is a little less than a man and at his worst he is little more than an animal. Portia will do anything rather than marry a drunk i) Antonio requests Bassanio not to bother arguing with Shylock. He might as well go stand on beach and ask ocean to be smaller or ask a wolf why he killed the lamb and made its mother cry. It is like asking the pine trees on mountain top to stop ii) iii) iv) v) waving when there is heavy wind blowing. He might as well do these impossible things than trying to soften the Jewish heart. Shylock argues that many Christians own slaves whom they treat as donkeys and dogs and use them to perform awful jobs just because they bought them. If Shylock asks them to set free their slaves or get them married to their daughters or not to make their work hard, they would not agree and would reply that slaves are theirs. Similarly the pound of flesh which Shylock wants from Antonio was bought very expensive. It is Shylock s and he is going to get it. The law of Venice states that if a foreign resident directly or indirectly attempts to kill any citizen, the person he tried to kill will receive one half of the foreigner s goods and other half goes to state. Whether the offender gets to live or dies is completely on the Duke to decide. Duke pardons Shylock life before he asks for pardon. He asks him to give half the wealth to Antonio and other half to state. In case Shylock shows proper humility, Duke was ready to reduce this penalty to fine. Duke wanted to show Shylock that Christian s do not vie for the blood of others and are ready to forgive and show kindness. I don t think Prince of Morocco would have been a good husband for Portia. He is a pompous man and brags about being a hero. He is conscious of his dark skin colour and tries to impress Portia stating his skin colour has made brave mean fear him and Moroccan girls love him. He chooses the gold casket showing that he is superficial, greedy and materialistic. Prince of Arragon chooses the silver casket. In it was the picture of an idiot holding a scroll stating that he was fool and should go away. a) Morocco rejects the lead casket as being not worth the high stakes for which he gambles. He rejects the lead casket as he feels a golden mind doesn t bend down to choose something worthless. He ponders a long time over the silver casket and is sure he deserves Portia by birth. However he thinks her picture will not be enclosed in silver which is ten times less valuable than gold. The gold casket has the inscription He who chooses me will get what many men want . As Portia is desired by whole world and Morocco is a person who goes by outward appearances, he selects the gold casket. b) Arragon chooses the silver casket. Many men could mean that most people are fools and chose whatever is flashy. They don t go beyond whatever their eyes see or bother to find what s on the inside and pays attention only to the outside. The prince won t choose what many men desire because he won t jump on the bandwagon and include himself with the whole crude population. c) Bassanio does not want to go by outward appearances which may be false. He refuses the gaudy gold box which was like the gold that Midas could not eat. He also refuses silver, calling it "common drudge 'tween man and man," as coins are. On the lead casket it was written "he who chooses me must hazard everything he hath'. Bassanio was ready to hazard everything for Portia and he chooses the lead casket. Bassanio thinks that the eyes in the painting move as his eyes move. He wonders how the painter could have done the painting while looking at the beautiful eyes. He comments that the hair looks like a golden mesh to trap the hearts of men just like little flies are trapped in cobwebs. d) Shylock was enraged and had confused emotions. He was shouting on the streets My daughter, oh my ducats, oh my daughter, ran off with a Christian.. . Hhe wanted to find his daughter and get the money and jewels back. So he went and complained to the duke. He could not believe that his own flesh and blood turned against him and wanted his daughter to be dead. e) Bassanio knows that people are often tricked by outward appearances. He gives the following three examples for not going by outward appearances and for rejecting the gaudy gold box. In court someone can deliver a false plea but hide his wickedness with a pretty voice. Many people who are cowards at heart wear beard like Hercules or Mars, the god of war. Curly golden hair which makes a woman look very beautiful may actually be a wig made of dead people s hair. a) Scene takes place in Belmont, at Portia s residence. Lorenzo is addressing these lines to Jessica. As per Lorenzo, music has a huge impact on the listener. A wild herd of animals or young untrained colts would stand still when they hear trumpet. Sweet music makes their wild eyes peaceful. There is nothing in the world that can resist music. b) The man who cannot be moved by harmonious melodies is fit only for treason, violence and pillage. His soul is dark and no one should trust him. c) Portia says that Gratiano was wrong in giving away the wife s first gift so thoughtlessly. Gratiano had sworn to keep the ring on his finger & was bound to it. By giving away the ring, he had given valid reason for his wife to be upset with him. d) Portia teases Bassanio by saying that if there was no ring in his finger, then there was no truth in his heart. Had Bassanio understood how much the ring meant, he wouldn t have let it go. He accuses him of giving the ring to a woman. e) Bassanio explains to Portia that he gave the ring to the lawyer who saved his friend s life. He had offered him 3000 ducats but the lawyer refused the money and insisted on the ring. Bassanio felt ashamed refusing and wanted to show his good manners. He states that if Portia has been present in the situation, she would have begged him to give the ring to the lawyer. i) Crisped snaky golden locks means curly winding like golden hair . This may actually be a wig from a dead person s hair. Dowry of second head means ii) iii) iv) v) possession by someone else , here it is that of a dead person whose skull is lying in the tomb. A lovely scarf can hide a dark skinned beauty. Bassanio does not want to go by outward appearances which may be false. He refuses the gaudy gold box which was like the gold that Midas could not eat. He does not want to do anything with pale silver either with which common coins are made of. Bassanio wondered which artist captured her likeness so well in the portrait. He thinks that when the artist finished one eye, it would have enraptured him and kept him from painting the other one. Portia says that along with the ring, Bassanio becomes the owner of the beautiful mansion, master of the servants and her lord . If Bassanio ever gives away the ring or loses it, then their love will be doomed and she will be angry with him. Portia who is the romantic heroine of the play is gifted with both beauty and brain. Portia s intellect is also seen in her wit and humor. She skillfully uses her intellect in answering her suitors and putting them down if the need arises, without lacking in courtesy. The ring scene in the last act also is a good example for her humour. She has a compassionate nature and gives Bassanio money to save his friend. This also comes out during her speech on Quality of Mercy in the court. Portia comes out as a very practical and resourceful person. Hearing Antonio s plight, she seeks advice from a learned doctor of law and leaves for Venice, disguised as a lawyer to save Antonio s life. Throughout the trial, she exudes a rare self-confidence and deftly saves Antonio from the clutches of Shylock. Portia s feminine nature is best seen in her love for Bassanio and absolute surrender to him. She is also a dutiful daughter and acts according to her father s will. Portia is a typical renaissance heroine who is cultured, refined, well versed in literature, music and arts. i) Mercy is most powerful when granted by those who hold power over others. It s more important to a monarch than his crown. His scepter shows the level of his temporal power but mercy is above that sceptered power. ii) The quality of mercy is not strained. It drops on to the world as the gentle rain does from heaven. It s doubly blessed. It blesses both the giver and the receiver. iii) Antonio feels that fortune has been kind to him. Usually she makes the unhappy man live on after he loses his wealth, to spend his old age in poverty. But in Antonio s case she is letting him avoid that misery by death. iv) Antonio asks Bassanio to convey his greetings to his wife and tell her how he died and how much he loved Bassanio. After hearing the complete story, he wants Portia to judge whether Bassanio has a true friend. Antonio does not want Bassanio to regret about the debt. Bassanio should regret only about losing the friend. v) Shylock s passion for revenge overrides his passion for money. He refuses even ten times the borrowed money offered by Bassanio, to spare Antonio s life. The insults and abuse he had to face in the Christian society had embittered his soul. Still it does not provide justification to take the life of a person in such inhuman way, by taking a pound of flesh from his heart. 1. Speakers are Bassanio and Portia who is disguised as a lawyer. Bassanio offered Portia 3000 ducats which they had owed Shylock. When Portia refuses to take the money, Bassanio asks her to take some memento as token of gratitude. 2. Portia demanded Antonio s gloves and Bassanio s ring as memento. Bassanio is reluctant to part with the ring as he had made a promise to wife to never part with the ring, when she had given him the ring. Instead of his ring, Bassanio promises to find the most expensive ring in Venice and give it to the lawyer. 3. Portia states that many men use the excuse of their wife getting angry to avoid giving gift. If Bassanio s wife is not a mad woman and knows the real reason behind parting with the ring, she will not stay angry forever with Bassanio. Though Portia acts annoyed, she is having fun at playing a prank at her husband. 4. Portia insists on getting the ring as the gift. Bassanio asks her to excuse this ring and tries to lure her with a much better ring . 5. Antonio suggests Bassanio to give the lawyer the ring. He asks him to weigh between how much the lawyer deserves the ring for saving Antonio s life with respect to following wife s order. So Bassanio sends the ring to the lawyer thru Gratiano. 1. Bassanio has come to Belmont to try his luck at the lottery of caskets to win Portia. The speech is made when he is presented with three caskets gold, silver and lead from which he had to choose the correct one which had Portia s portrait inside. Bassanio is in a room in Portia s house in Belmont 2. Bassanio does not want to go by outward appearances which may be false. He refuses the gaudy gold box which was like the gold that Midas could not eat. He does not want to do anything with pale silver either with which common coins is made of. 3. Bassanio unmoved by the sparkle of gold and silver chooses the lead casket as it challenges to risk everything that one possess. He truly loved Portia and was ready to risk everything for her. Bassanio is enraptured by the beauty of Portia s portrait in the casket. He feels dazed, like someone after winning a contest is still not sure if the applause and cheering are for him. 4. Portia presents herself as an innocent and inexperienced girl. She says that she is not stupid and will learn fast. She wishes she had more of everything to give Bassanio, a thousand times more beautiful and ten thousand times more richer . 5. Gratiano and Nerissa decide to get married after Bassanio succeeds in winning Portia. Gratiano fell in love with Nerissa as soon as he saw her and started chasing her. Nerissa agreed to marry him if Portia and Bassanio get married. i. ii. iii. iv. v. Lorenzo is the speaker. As per the speaker, stillness and night time are the appropriate settings for music. Jessica is never merry when she hears sweet music. Lorenzo says that is because her soul is paying attention to the music. Even wild herd of animals and untrained colts will stand still when they hear a trumpet or any kind of music. Portia comments that Bassanio should be bound to Antonio, since he tied himself so much for Bassanio. She plays pun with the word bound . She means Bassanio should be indebted to Antonio as Antonio became a prisoner for signing the bond. Meaning of first line is to wake up Moon goddess with a hymn. Diana is the roman goddess of chastity and moon. Act 5 concludes the play in an atmosphere of peace and joy. As the play is a romantic comedy, there is enough fun created by the ring episode. The impassioned dialogues of Lorenzo and Jessica create an atmosphere of love and music. After enough of teasing, Portia reveals the identity of lawyer and the clerk, Antonio s good fortune and the inheritance of Shylock s wealth after his death by Lorenzo and Jessica. All the loose ends are tied up and the end is happy aided by love, loyalty and a good sense of humour. i. ii. iii. iv. v. Salanio speaks this words. Shylock was shouting in the streets with confused emotions , My daughter, oh my ducats, oh my daughter! Ran off with Christian! Oh my Christian ducats. He cries how his daughter stole 2 bags of sealed ducats and precious jewels and wants to find her. The scene takes place in the street of Venice. As per Salanio, Antonio only loves life because of Bassanio. Quicken his embraced heaviness means cheer up the sadness in which he is indulging . Salanio advises Salarino to break this news slowly to Antonio. Salarino mentions that there is no nicer guy than Antonio in the world. He saw Antonio seeing off Bassanio asking him not to worry about the contract with Shylock and to focus on how to win his love. In this scene , Shylock discovers the elopement of his daughter with a Christian and her theft of jewels and money while fleeing. This intensifies his hatred for Christians and his desire for revenge. Salarino and Salanio talk about a shipwreck and hope that it is not Antonio s . The scene further highlights Antonio s love for Bassanio as he bids farewell to him on his trip to Belmont to win Portia. Scene acts a precursor to the set of events which are going to happen like Antonio s inability to repay the loan, Shylock s attempt on taking revenge and Bassanio s chance for winning Portia in the lottery of casket. Prince of Morocco comes across as a pompous man who falls for outward appearance. He seems superficial and materialistic. He is conscious of his dark brown colour but tries to impress Portia stating his skin colour has made brave mean fear him and Moroccan girls love him.
