This time is to be spent in reading the question paper. The entire paper is to be handwritten on file sheets and uploaded on MS FORMS _________________________________________________________________________ SECTION I (30 Marks) Attempt all questions from this section Question 1 (a) i) Name the SI unit of Force. [2] ii) Write an expression which establishes the relation between the mass m of a body and the acceleration a produced by it, when a force F is applied to it. (b) [2] Observe the graphs given above and describe what each graph depicts against the correct figure number. (Do not draw the graphs) (c) i)) A ship sails from the sea towards a river. Will it submerge more or less? [2] ii) Explain your answer. Which of the waves given below [2] is the most suitable to be used? i) Wave A with frequency 20 kHz ii) Wave B with frequency 3 GHz ii) State reasons for your answer. (c) Shown below is a dry cell and a car battery ie lead acid accumulator. Identify the [2] type of cells they can be classified into and give one differences between them. (d) Complete the following diagram to show the magnetic field of the pair of magnets [2] given below. (e) A person burns a firecracker and its sound is heard in 0.4s by another person in a [2] building 132.8 m away. Find the speed at which the sound travelled. Section II (30 Marks) Attempt any 3 questions from this Section Question 4 (a) The force between two bodies m and m1 separated by a distance r is given by F and can be expressed by Newtons law of gravitation.as F = G m m1 r2 i) Rewrite the above equation to express the relation of the force F , between a body m and the Earth. ii) An astronaut of mass 72 kg lands on the moon. If the acceleration due to gravity on the moon is 1/6th that of the earth then Compare: 1. The weight of the astronaut on the earth and the moon. 2. The mass of the astronaut on the earth and the moon. ---------------------------------------------------3------------------------------------------------------ [3] (b) An object is weighed in air as shown below. It is immersed in three different liquids [3] A, B, and C. It displaces some water each time which is weighed and is recorded below: Weight of displaced Liquid A: 1 N Weight of displaced Liquid B: 4 N Weight of displaced Liquid C: 3 N i) In which of the above liquids will this body float? (c) ii) What will be the weight of the body while in the above fluid? iii) State the rule that helped you to arrive at the answer. i) Derive the third law of equation of motion for a body moving with uniform [4] acceleration. ii) A stone thrown upwards takes 4 s to return back to the starting point. Calculate the initial velocity of the stone and the maximum height reached by it. (g=10m/s2) Question 5 (a) Draw a neat labelled diagram to show the formation of a magnified virtual image [3] when an object is placed in front of a concave mirror. (b) A sound wave is travelling in air with an approximate speed of 345m/s. The [3] temperature of the air is 250C. How will the speed of the wave get affected if: (c) i) The temperature falls further. ii) The water vapor content in the air decreases. iii) The wave travels in water. i) Redraw the given circuit diagram using the appropriate symbols for the components seen in the circuit. Close the circuit. ii) A current of 0.5 A passes through the resistor which has a potential difference of 2.4 V across it. Calculate the value of the resistor . -------------------------------------------------4-------------------------------------------------------- [4] Question 6 (a) i) A cyclist driving at 36 km/h stops his motion in 5 s after the application of brakes. [3] Calculate the retardation of the cycle and the distance travelled during the retardation. (b) Shown below is the velocity time graph of a car. [3] . (c) i) For how long does the car move with uniform velocity? ii) Calculate the acceleration of the car in the first 10 s. iii) What is the displacement of the car in the last 10 s? Given below is a displacement -distance graph of a sound wave. [4] i) From the graph above find the magnitude of the wavelength of the wave? ii) If the velocity of the wave is 300 m/s, calculate the frequency of the wave. iii) Will the above sound be audible to us? Question 7 (a) Shown in the diagram below is a mirror with an object placed in front of it. (Do not draw or complete the figure) i) Name the point marked as A in the diagram. ii) State the characteristics of the image that will be formed. iii) State one use of the above mirror.
