These are some of the important handpicked extracts from The Merchant of Venice play

I,based on a study of the past few years’ Board papers strongly feel that the Board might want to quiz you students on any two of these

For your ease,

I have mentioned the Act and the corresponding scene

along with The Name of the Character

Also, the words that begin and end the dialogue

So,here we go

1)Act I Sc.3

Shylock

(Aside) How like a fawning publican he looks! …………….. If I forgive him!

2)Act II Sc.1

Morocco

Mislike me not for my………. my gentle queen.

3)Act II Sc.3

Jessica

I am sorry thou wilt leave my father…….see me in talk with thee

4)Act II Sc.6

Shylock

The patch is kind enough……….A proverb never stale in thrifty mind.

5)Act II Sc.9

Arragon

And so have I addressed me………..And instantly unlock my fortunes here.

6)Act III Sc.1

Shylock

To bait fish withal……..but I will better the instruction

7)Act III Sc.2

Portia

I pray you……To stay you from election

8)Act III Sc.2

Bassanio

So may the outward shows………joy be the consequence

9)Act III Sc.2

Bassanio

O sweet Portia, Here are a few……….of merchant marring rocks.

10)Act III Sc.4

Portia

I never did repent for doing good………Now lays upon you

11)Act IV Sc.1

Duke

Make room, and let him stand before our face………..we all expect a gentle answer, Jew

12)Act IV Sc.1

Antonio

I pray you, think you question with the Jew……….Let me have judgement, and the Jew his will

13)Act IV Sc.1

Antonio

But little: I am armed and well prepared………….I’ll pay it instantly with all my heart.

14)Act V Sc.1

Portia

The crow doth sing as sweetly…….not be awaked.

15)Act V Sc.1

Bassanio

Sweet Portia, If you did know to whom I gave the ring……..strength of your displeasure.

16)Act V Sc.1

Portia

You are all amazed………. I chanced on this letter.

These 16 dialogues have been carefully chosen based on my expertise and experience

I am not telling you to skip the other dialogues

However, these are the ones which I feel are more important and no student can afford to ignore the same

I hope this helps
