suppose while taking six grid reference I find the point is 1.1 cm from easting or northing then  shall I consider the reference number as 5 or 6?

1) how do you find out the direction of a river,when there are no arrows given?
The Banda river flows westwards and they say the spot heights decreasing but I don't see them decreasing!!

2) how do you determine in what side of the river is some place situated?
How do you know whether it's the left bank or the right bank?
