ENGLISH Paper 2 - 1990 Literature in English (Two Hours) Answers to this Paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the question paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. Attempt five questions in all. You must attempt one question from each of the Sections A, B and C and any two other questions. The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ]. S ECTION A - DRAMA Shakespeare : Julius Caesar Question 1 Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: Antony : Hie hence and tell him so. Yet, stay a while; Thou shalt not back till I have borne this corpse Into the market-place; there shall I try, In my oration, how the people take The cruel issue of these bloody men; (i) To whom was Antony speaking? Where were they? How had the person being spoken to come to be there? [2] (ii) What did Antony mean by 'Hie hence and tell him so'? [2] (iii) What is a 'corpse'? Whose was it? How is this brought out in line 5 of this extract? [2] (iv) What is meant by the word 'oration'? How did Antony come to make this oration? What did he mean by 'how the people take'? What instruction did Antony now give this person? [4] (v) State how Antony turned the public against the conspirators. [7] Question 2 Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: Antony : This was the noblest Roman of them all; All the conspirators save only he Did that they did in envy of great Caesar; He only, in a general honest thought And common good to all, made one of them. (i) Where was Antony at this time? Why? Whom was he speaking of and to whom? [2] (ii) What does 'noblest' mean? How is this explained in this extract? Quote one statement which each of the following made which pin-points their 'envy'; Cassius; Casca; Decius; Brutus; Trebonius. [4 ] (iii) Express lines 4 and 5 of this extract in simpler language. What evidence is there in the play about 'honest thought' and 'common good'? [6] (iv) What else did Antony say about this person? How did Octavius react to what Antony said? [6] (v) Which of the characters in this play has impressed you the most? Why (Brief answer). [3 ]
