ENGLISH Paper 2 - 1992 Literature in English (Two Hours) Answers to this Paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the question paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. Attempt five questions in all. You must attempt one question from each of the Sections A, B and C and any two other questions. The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ]. S ECTION A - DRAMA Shakespeare : Julius Caesar Question 1 Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: Flavius : Go, go good countrymen, and for this fault Assemble all the poor men of your sort; Draw them to Tiber banks, and weep your tears Into the channel, till the lowest stream Do kiss the most exalted shores of all. [Exeunt all the Commoners.] See whe'r their basest mettle be not mov'd; They vanish tongue-tied in their guiltiness Go you down that way towards the Capital; This way will I. Disrobe the images If you do find them deck'd with ceremonies. M ay we do so? You know it is the feast of Lupercal. M arullus : (i) What is the fault, mentioned in line I by Flavius, of which M arullus has accused the commoners? [2] (ii) What have they (the commoners) done to deserve this rebuke? [4] (iii) Flavius here tells the commoners to weep. Who, later in the play, reduces them to tears, and on what occasion? [4] (iv) What effect does Flavius hope the action of disrobing the images will have upon Caesar? [4] (v) What happens to Flavius and M arullus as a result of this action? [2] Question 2 Read the extract given below and answer the question that follow: Cassius : [Pindarus ascends the hill] This day I breathed first; time is come round, And where I did begin, there shall I end; M y Life is run his compass. Sirrah, what news? Pindarus : [above] O my Lord! Cassius : What news? Pindarus : Titinius is enclosed round about With horsemen, that make to him on the spur; Yet he spurs on. Now they are almost on him; Now, Titnius! Now some light; O, he lights too; He's ta'en [shout] and hark! They shout for joy. Cassius : Come down; behold no more. O, coward that I am, to live so long, To see my best friend ta'en before my face! [Pindarus descends] (i) What attitude of mind do you think Cassius displays in his first speech, This day I breathed first..........run his compass? What is the reason for his present condition of mind? [5] (ii) Why has Cassius sent Pindarus up the hill to watch events, instead of going himself? [3] (iii) Explain clearly and fully what in fact has happened to Titinius. [5] (iv) What is the meaning of the phrase, 'Now some light', in line 9? [2] (v) What does Pindarus do after descending?
