ENGLISH Paper 2 - 1991 Literature in English (Two Hours) Answers to this Paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the question paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. Attempt five questions in all. You must attempt one question from each of the Sections A, B and C and any two other questions. The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ]. S ECTION A - DRAMA Shakespeare : Julius Caesar Question 1 Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: Brutus : ..........let no man abide this deed But we the doers. (Enter Trebonius) Cassius : Where's Antony? Trebonius : Fled to his house amaz'd. M en, wives and children stare, cry out and run . As it were doomsday. (i) Where are the speakers at the moment? What does 'this deed' refer to? Who are 'we the doers'? [2] (ii) How do Antony and the public react to the deed? Indicate two strong emotions that are aroused in them now. When you read this part of the scene, what were your own feelings towards the 'doers' and the victim? [4] (iii) Brutus now directs his friends to 'walk forth' in a procession. What instructions does he give them in this regard? What impression about the 'doers' does he aim at creating upon the Romans, by this? Do you doubt the sincerity of his purpose? Give a reason. [4] (iv) Briefly relate (in 8-10 lines) the role Antony plays now, which will have serious consequences later. (Relate only the present role of Antony and NOT the consequences). [6] (v) What does Brutus mean by saying : 'let no man abide this deed but we the doers'? Relate briefly how the 'doers' did 'abide this deed' later in the play. [4] Question 2 Read the extract given below and answer the question that follow: Brutus : O Cassius, I am sick of many griefs. Cassius : Of your philosophy you make no use If you give place to accidental evils. Brutus : No man bears sorrow better. Portia is dead. .............................................................. Cassius : How scap'd I killing when I cross'd you so? O insupportable and touching loss! (i) Where are the speakers, now? State the moods in which they were a while ago, and their present moods. [2 ] (ii) What is the 'philosophy' referred to in line 2? And what is its teaching, as is relevant here? Does Brutus deserve this mild blame from Cassius? Give a reason. [2 ] (iii) Show the violent manner in which Cassius had angered Brutus. State two of Brutus' accusations against Cassius, which provoked the latter. Brutus also makes a bitter, personal complaint against Cassius. What was it? [4] (iv) Explain in simple words: 'O insupportable and touching loss!' How does Brutus account for his touching loss i.e., Portia's death? Name two of the virtues of the lady that shine through her death. How has her death moved you? [5 ] (v) Show how the scene towards the end, bodes ill for Brutus. How does he react then? [5 ] How does it affect him later?
