ECONOMIC APPLICATIONS - 2001 (Two Hours) Answers to this Paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. PAPER I (40 Marks) Attempt all questions from this Section. Question 1 (a) How is the supply of labour different from the supply of other goods? [3] (b) What is bank-rate? How does it influence the total money supply? [4] (c) M ention three salient features of Joint Stock Companies. [3] Question 2 (a) "Deficit financing should only be used as a last resort." Comment. [3] (b) What is a Public Corporation? How does it differ from a Departmental Organization? [4] (c) What is meant by the economic infrastructure of an economy? M ention its principal components. [3] Question 3 (a) List four important reasons for the unbalanced growth of industries in India. [4] (b) "Industrial development depends to a very large extent on the progress that we make in the field of agriculture." Explain. [3] (c) Give two important measures adopted by the government to assist cottage and small scale industries. [3] Question 4 (a) What is a plan holiday? Give the years of a plan holiday. [4] (b) Give three reasons for the slow rate of capital formation in India. [3] (c) "Entrepreneurship is not labour even though there are human factors associated with the same business." Explain. [3] PART II (40 Marks) Attempt any four questions forn this Section. Question 5 (a) What is industrialization? Explain the need for industrialization in India. [6] (b) State four factors which determine the efficiency of labour. [4] Question 6 (a) Review critically the Industrial Policy Resolution of 1956. [6] (b) "Give four reasons for the failure of the new agricultural strategy in India." [4] Question 7 (a) Enumerate the programmes included in the reorganization of agriculture. [4] (b) "Co-operative organisations are good in theory but a failure in practice." Elucidate this statement. [4] Question 8 (a) Discuss how the Central Bank is useful to society and the Government? [6] (b) Write a short note on the tele-communication system in India. [4] Question 9 (a) Account for the increasing importance of State undertakings in modern times. [6] (b) Enumerate the political and economic objectives of planning in India. [4] Question 10 (a) Discuss the role played by the joint sector in our country's industrial development. [6] (b) "Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy." Discuss. [4]
