ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY (AS) General Certificate of Education January 2007 Technology and Design assessing Unit 1 Product Design and Practice: Materials, Components and their Uses ASV11 Assessment Unit AS 1 [ASV11] WEDNESDAY 10 JANUARY, MORNING TIME 1 hour 30 minutes. INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES Write your Centre Number and Candidate Number on the Answer Booklet provided and on the A3 pro forma answer page provided. Answer all seven questions. Answer the one question in Section A, and all six questions in Section B. Answers to Question 1(b) in Section A should be made on the A3 pro forma answer page provided. You are provided with an insert for use with Question 1. Do not write your answers on this insert. INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES The total mark for this paper is 60, including a maximum of 3 marks for quality of written communication. At the conclusion of the examination, attach the A3 pro forma answer page securely to the Answer Booklet with the treasury tag supplied. Figures in brackets printed down the right-hand side of pages indicate the marks awarded to each question or part question. A materials data sheet is provided. ASV1W7 2171 Section A Answer the one question in this Section. You are advised to spend approximately 45 minutes on this Section. 1 The ice-cream scoop as shown in Fig. 1 to Fig. 4, is a low cost product. (a) With reference to Fig. 1 to Fig. 4 on the insert sheet, complete the following: (i) Suggest a suitable material for the blade and briefly explain how the curved profile has been achieved (Fig. 4). [2] (ii) Briefly describe two aspects of the product which show that the designer has considered ergonomics. [2] (iii) Suggest what machining process the spud would have gone through and briefly explain how it was secured to the blade. [2] (iv) Briefly outline one positive and one negative comment regarding the hygienic qualities of the product. [2] (v) Give two main reasons why each of the following materials are used. mild steel for the shaft (Fig. 3) nylon for the gearwheel (Fig. 3). [4] (vi) Suggest a suitable manufacturing process for the scoop (Fig. 2) and give one main reason for your choice. [2] (vii)Select whether one-off, batch or mass production methods would be used to produce the gearwheel (Fig. 3) and give one main reason for your choice. [2] (b) With the aid of detailed annotated sketches, using the blank A3 pro forma answer page (answer number 1(b)), suggest appropriate improvements for the following: (i) a means of ensuring that when the handle is squeezed in that it will return to its open position when released. (Fig. 1) [6] After prolonged use it was found that the gearwheel was starting to slip on the shaft. (ii) produce a design that will prevent slippage. (Fig. 3) ASV1W7 2171 2 [6] [Turn over Section B Answer all six questions in this section. You are advised to spend approximately 45 minutes on this Section. 2 Electrical cables use copper for the wire and polythene for the outer cover. State two specific properties that would have influenced the selection of copper and two specific properties that would have influenced the selection of polythene. [4] 3 Machine screws, self tapping screws and knock down fittings are considered semi-permanent methods used for joining materials. (i) Identify two permanent methods that could be used to join materials. [1] (ii) Briefly explain the difference between each of the semi-permanent methods stated below: 4 machine screws, self tapping screws, knock down fittings. [3] Beech and oak are widely used for household products. (i) Give one main reason why: beech is used for kitchen utensils, oak is used for kitchen units. [2] (ii) State two different surface coatings suitable for wood and briefly explain the purpose of each. (ii) Give one main reason why casting is the most suitable process. (i) Distinguish between employee and consumer safety. [1] (ii) Briefly outline two main characteristics associated with the Health and Safety at Work Act. [2] (iii) Briefly outline two main characteristics associated with the Trades Description Act. 7 [2] The life cycle of a product begins at the inception stage. (i) Using an annotated sketch, label and identify the next four stages in the life cycle of a product of your choice.
