ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY (AS) General Certificate of Education January 2008 Technology and Design assessing Unit 1 Product Design and Practice: Materials, Components and their Uses ASV11 Assessment Unit AS 1 [ASV11] WEDNESDAY 9 JANUARY, MORNING TIME 1 hour 30 minutes. INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES Write your Centre Number and Candidate Number on the Answer Booklet provided and on the A3 pro forma answer page provided. Answer all seven questions. Your answers to Question 1(b) in Section A should be made on the A3 pro forma answer page provided. You are provided with an insert for use with Question 1. Do not write your answers on this insert. INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES The total mark for this paper is 60, including a maximum of 3 marks for quality of written communication. At the conclusion of the examination, attach the A3 pro forma answer page securely to the Answer Booklet with the treasury tag supplied. Figures in brackets printed down the right-hand side of pages indicate the marks awarded to each question or part question. A materials data sheet is provided. ASV1W8 3218 Section A Answer the one question in this section. You are advised to spend approximately 45 minutes on this section. 1 The scooter as shown on the insert is a popular product for many young people. (a) With reference to Fig. 1 to Fig. 7 on the insert sheet, complete the following: (i) Give two main reasons why each of the following materials are used. l Aluminium for the body (Fig. 1) l Nylon for the wheel (Fig. 5). [4] (ii) Briefly describe three aspects of the product which show that the designer has considered ergonomics. [3] (iii) Give one main reason why each of the following material forms have been used. l Tubular section (Fig. 6) l Box section (Fig. 5) l and sheet (Fig. 7). [3] (iv) Give two main reasons why the fastening shown in (Fig. 3 and Fig. 4) is used. [2] (v) Suggest a suitable manufacturing process for the plastic inserts (Fig. 5) and give one main reason for your choice. [2] (vi) Suggest two main reasons why high carbon steel is used to manufacture the bearings (Fig. 7). [2] (b) With the aid of detailed annotated sketches, using the blank A3 pro forma answer page (answer number 1(b)), suggest an appropriate improvement for each of the following: (i) A means of preventing the user s heel slipping off the curved mudguard at A A when pressing it down to act as a brake (Fig. 7). [6] (ii) Design a bracket that will enable a personalised acrylic badge 100 mm in diameter to be quickly secured or removed from the front of the scooter at position B B (Fig. 6). You are advised to spend approximately 45 minutes on this section. 2 The tensile, compressive, shear or torsional strength of a material can influence its selection. Briefly explain each of these four elements of strength. 3 [4] (i) Briefly explain the difference between thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics. [1] (ii) For each application listed below, select a suitable plastic from acrylic, nylon and polystyrene, and give one main reason for your choice. l l l l 4 Shop signs Beads for wall insulation Gearwheels Packaging [4] Wind and geothermal power are alternative energy sources. (i) With the use of annotated sketches, briefly explain the main features of wind and geothermal energy systems. [4] (ii) Briefly outline one main positive environmental factor associated with the use of geothermal power. Briefly explain what is meant by these terms. 7 [4] Scientific advances and changes in fashion can have an influence on the design of many products. With reference to MP3 players, briefly outline one main scientific change and one main change in fashion and explain how these changes have influenced the design of these players.
