ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY (AS) General Certificate of Education 2007 Technology and Design assessing Unit 1 Product Design and Practice: Materials, Components and their Uses ASV11 Assessment Unit AS 1 [ASV11] TUESDAY 5 JUNE, MORNING TIME 1 hour 30 minutes. INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES Write your Centre Number and Candidate Number on the Answer Booklet provided and on the A3 pro forma answer page provided. Answer all seven questions. Your answer to Question 1(b) in Section A should be made on the A3 pro forma answer page provided. You are provided with an insert for use with Questions 1, 5 and 6. Do not write your answers on this insert. INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES The total mark for this paper is 60, including a maximum of 3 marks for quality of written communication. At the conclusion of the examination, attach the A3 pro forma answer page securely to the Answer Booklet with the treasury tag supplied. Figures in brackets printed down the right-hand side of pages indicate the marks awarded to each question or part question. A materials data sheet is provided. ASV1S7 2172 Section A You are advised to spend approximately 45 minutes on this section. 1 The ironing board as shown in Fig. 1 to Fig. 5, is a low cost product that can be quickly set up for ironing or folded down to aid storage. (a) With reference to Fig. 1 to Fig. 5 on the insert sheet, complete the following: (i) Using specific aesthetic terms, briefly outline two main aspects in support of the fact that the designer has incorporated aesthetic appeal into the product. [2] (ii) Briefly outline two main reasons why the pins shown have been used on the bars which pass through the board frame. (Fig. 5). [2] (iii) The product has been spray painted. Suggest an alternative surface coating that would improve the aesthetic appeal of the product. [1] (iv) Suggest suitable manufacturing processes for each of the parts below and give one main reason why each is suitable. (v) Securing the frame to the iron holder (Fig. 5) The curved profile of the edge of the board. (Fig. 4) [4] Give one main reason why each of the following materials are used: mild steel tubing for the legs (Fig. 1) nylon for the guides (Fig. 4) sheet steel for the iron holder. (Fig. 5) [3] (vi) Common forms and sizes of materials are used for the feet, legs, board and iron holder. Briefly outline two main benefits associated with using common forms and sizes of materials. (Fig. 3) 2 [2] [Turn over (b) With the aid of detailed annotated sketches, using the blank A3 pro forma answer page (answer number 1(b)), suggest appropriate improvements for the following: (i) a design that will enable the user to quickly lock the legs together in the storage or carrying position (Fig. 2) but will be secured to the product to prevent it from being lost. [6] (ii) a design that will enable the user to quickly extend and secure the length of the legs (at the position shown in Fig. 1 (A A)). You are advised to spend approximately 45 minutes on this section. 2 Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) and Chipboard Melamine are classified as composite materials. (i) Briefly explain what is meant by the term composite material. [1] (ii) Briefly outline two main properties of GRP that makes it suitable for car bodies. [2] (iii) Briefly outline two main properties of Chipboard Melamine that makes it suitable for kitchen worktops. [2] 3 Designers use creativity techniques and employ a range of entrepreneurial, collaborative and team working skills. (i) Briefly outline two creativity techniques commonly used by designers. (ii) Briefly outline what is meant by the term entrepreneurial skills. [1] (iii) Briefly outline what is meant by the term collaborative skills. 4 [2] [1] A report focusing on improvements in a company manufacturing and assembling electric kettles made reference to the following terms: just in time standard components statistical testing methods factor of safety. Briefly explain what is meant by each of these terms. ASV1S7 ASV1S7 2172 4 [4] [Turn over 5 Garden patio chairs as shown in Fig. 6 on the insert sheet, are manufactured by injection moulding. (i) Give two main reasons why injection moulding is the most suitable process for this product. (ii) Suggest a suitable material for the injection moulding process. [1] (iii) With the aid of an annotated sketch describe the injection moulding process. 6 [2] [3] A company which designs and manufactures a range of stair rails as shown in Fig. 7 on the insert sheet has decided to investigate the benefits of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). For each of the following points below, and with reference to the product, briefly outline two specific uses for ICT 7 Modelling CAD/CAM Costing. [6] Manufacturers continually focus on the energy costs and environmental effects associated with recycling. For a product of your choice: (i) Outline two different types of energy costs associated with recycling. [2] (ii) Outline two main environmental effects associated with recycling.
