He is very unhappy because he feels that other residents are avoiding him and that some members of staff seem wary of him. He has heard that one care assistant is afraid to be alone with him. His daughter, Emily, is concerned that this is because when her father was younger he suffered severe depression, resulting in a number of admissions to a psychiatric hospital. She feels there is still a stigma attached to mental illness and that her father is experiencing discrimination as a result of prejudice.
