She has been in this situation during a number of periods in her life when her children were young, when her mother died about 20 years ago and since the death of her husband two years ago. One of Ethel s daughters also suffers from depression but refuses to take drugs, relying instead on other physical treatments like meditation and relaxation. When Ethel looks back at her life she feels as if she has had to deal with a great deal of disappointment. She was regarded as very bright at school and would love to have gone into teaching but her parents could not afford to pay for her education. They did not really think that she needed to have a career, so she had to leave school to go to work in a shop. She gave up work when she got married and any time she mentioned going back to study to become a teacher her husband used to tease her saying she had enough children to worry about with their own family of five. Ethel has been pretending to be happy for her children s sake for a long time. Only Marks Remark Anorexia nervosa means loss of appetite for nervous reasons . However, this is misleading because people with anorexia nervosa may have a normal appetite, but drastically control their eating and do not satisfy their appetite. People with anorexia do not wish to starve themselves to death but may deny the seriousness of a very low body weight. Bulimia . . . is marked by cycles of binge eating of excessive quantities of food, followed by purging using vomiting, laxatives or diuretics and/or excessive exercising. People with anorexia nervosa may binge eat as well as fasting, but those with bulimia do this much more regularly. Those with bulimia tend to be of normal weight and are more likely to realise they have a problem. (a) Using the information given and your own understanding of eating disorders, write down two similarities and two differences between clients suffering from anorexia nervosa and those suffering from bulimia nervosa.
