She is particularly afraid of the way they can move so quickly and feels both terrified and physically sick when she sees one. She genuinely feels as though she is going to faint with fear. Claire often has nightmares about hoards of spiders attacking her and smothering her with their webs. Claire s mother would never go into the bathroom if there was a spider in the sink and would always ask Claire s father to get rid of it. Now she blames herself for Claire s problem. Claire doesn t even want to visit friends in case they aren t as careful as she is about keeping windows closed. She feels permanently anxious if she leaves her own home. This is very sad because Claire is very outgoing and loves to be with groups of friends. Her GP recognises the seriousness of her problem and has referred her to a psychologist. (a) Use the information in the case study to identify four behaviours that suggest Claire has a phobia. 1. _______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ [1] 2. _______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ [1] 3. _______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ [1] 4. _______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ [1] A6H61W7 2498 2 Examiner Only Marks Remark (b) Eysenck would describe Claire as an extravert, rather than an introvert, because of her love of being with groups of friends. The other major dimension of personality in Eysenck s theory is stability-neuroticism , as shown in the diagram below. Members of the gang look up to Kevin and tell him he s the man when he takes risks; some younger gang members even call him the boss . He looks upon the members of his own gang as his family and he hates the members of another gang from a neighbouring estate. There have been some very vicious fights between the two gangs recently, involving knives. Kevin is regularly stopped and searched by the police but he feels they are just racist because he is Afro-Caribbean. Most people regard the estate Kevin lives on as being rough and Kevin believes that people who live there never get jobs because of where they are from. He didn t bother to study at school where he was regularly in trouble and he left with no qualifications. Kevin s twin brother died of meningitis when the boys were four, and Kevin s mother feels this is still affecting him. She suffered from depression for a long time after her son s death and had no partner to share her grief. (a) Explain social identity theory and use it to explain Kevin s behaviour.
