Her GP referred her to a neurologist who diagnosed a brain tumour. She has successfully undergone surgery and is preparing to return home where she lives with her husband Ian and their three young children. Jennifer s speech has been affected by the operation and she finds she has impaired balance and poor co-ordination. Her eyesight has also been affected as she suffers from blurred vision at times. She feels physically and emotionally drained and often finds herself crying. She is worried about her recovery and the effect on the children of having a mother with a disability. Ian, a school teacher, is considering giving up work to care for his wife. Jennifer has requested a visit from a member of Brainwaves N.I. (a voluntary organisation) which has agreed to advocate with health and social services on her behalf since she is concerned that, due to the Trust s lack of resources, she will not get the help she needs. Examiner Only Marks Remark Depression Alliance Scotland claims 300,000 people with depression were seen by GPs. While the condition afflicts men as often as women, men accounted for only a third of GP consultations. The discrepancy has led to concerns that Scotland s already high level of suicide among young men could increase. According to the study, treatment could improve and more could be done to lessen the stigma attached to the condition. Barriers to effective care highlighted in the report include: a lack of public awareness that depression is a medical illness people have difficulty in expressing themselves to their GPs problems in accessing services directly Ilena Brown, co-ordinator for Depression Alliance Scotland, said: Our findings confirm that there are still major barriers in Scotland when seeking to encourage men with depression to seek help. It is of particular concern that the major barrier would appear to be the stigma associated with depression, and other forms of mental illness, and that this is preventing men from accessing treatment, which could significantly improve their quality of life and, in many cases, avert the tragedy of suicide . She added: The message is simple we have to work as a society at reducing the stigma associated with depression if we are to avoid the further premature loss of life in young men . http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/2976828.stm (a) Explain the following terms: Stereotype _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ [2] Stigma _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ [2] A3H51S8 3502 7 [Turn over (b) Explain three ways stigma may affect men who are suffering from depression. 1. _______________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ [2] 2. _______________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ [2] 3. _______________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ [2] A3H51S8 3502 8 Examiner Only Marks Remark (c) Explain three different ways the Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN) can provide care when working with clients who suffer from depression.
