He has moved to a new town where the council has provided a site for travellers and their families. Over the years Peter has experienced prejudice and discrimination because of his culture. Both he and his young son suffer from chest problems and he has tried unsuccessfully to register with a GP in the town. When he went to the health centre he was told that the practice was not taking on any new patients. Peter has since found out from a support worker for the travelling community that this is untrue. Peter is convinced that he was turned away from the practice because there is a stigma attached to belonging to the travelling community. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, a mental illness, 6 years ago having spent most of his adolescence being labelled as a troublemaker because of his often erratic and unpredictable behaviour. Since his diagnosis, Simon has been in and out of hospital on several occasions and has had his medication changed several times in an attempt to stabilise his condition. His most recent period of hospitalization was 11 months ago his 3 week admission was necessary because he had started to hear voices again which were urging him to run away from home. His consultant, Dr Jennifer Jones, has been in charge of his treatment for the past 6 years. His community psychiatric nurse, Sam Lyons, is very supportive and Simon and he have struck up a good rapport. Simon attends his local Praxis day centre as often as he can. There he has the chance to speak to other young people affected by mental illness and to talk to the staff about any problems he might be facing. Simon finds this a good way to deal with stress. Simon has recently moved into supported accommodation 5 miles away from his elderly parents home, and has a social worker who visits him weekly to check on his progress. At the moment life is good for Simon, his illness is under control, he has a part time job in a supermarket, enjoys attending his local gym and he really wants to live a full and active life. However, Simon worries about his long-term mental health.
