Quality of written communication will be assessed in your answers. You should have with you your copies of the prescribed texts for this examination. A2L3S7 2441 Read all of this page carefully during your planning time Answer on one option. In this examination, you will be marked on your ability to respond with knowledge and understanding to literary texts of different types and periods, exploring and commenting on relationships and comparisons between literary texts (AO2ii) show detailed understanding of the ways in which writers choices of form, structure and language shape meanings (AO3) articulate independent opinions and judgements, informed by different interpretations of literary texts by different readers (AO4) evaluate the significance of cultural, historical and other contextual influences on literary texts and study (AO5ii). This means that in your answer, you must (i) show an awareness of the period in which each play was written and of the type of each play e.g. Classical Tragedy, late nineteenth-century Comedy of Manners where relevant to the question (ii) draw appropriate comparisons and contrasts between the plays show an understanding of the methods which the dramatists use e.g. character interactions, language (including imagery), structure and staging in relation to the main issues of the question develop an argument in response to the statement about the text given at the beginning of the question provide information from outside the text, relevant to the question, about the context; this could be historical, social, cultural circumstances in which the text was written and/or which are reflected in the text literary context concerned with the type of text e.g. Tragedy, Comedy of Manners or with a particular literary notion such as the hero. A2L3S7 A2L3S7 2441 2 [Turn over You must answer on one of the three synoptic options in this unit. Option A Sophocles: Oedipus Tyrannus Miller: Death of a Salesman The tragic hero should be the kind of hero in whom we can all see ourselves, and whose struggle we identify with. Neither Oedipus nor Willy is such a character: both are so hellbent on following what is shown to be a clearly mistaken path of action that we cannot share in their suffering or misfortune. By comparing and contrasting appropriately selected parts of the plays, show how far you would agree with the view expressed above. Your argument should include relevant comments on each writer s dramatic methods and contextual material on the nature of the tragic hero. A2L3S7 2441 3 [Turn over Option B Farquhar: The Beaux Stratagem Wilde: An Ideal Husband A Comedy of Manners should set out to attack society and its values. However, in The Beaux Stratagem, Farquhar offers his audience lighthearted entertainment with no really serious moral message. Wilde, on the other hand, in An Ideal Husband, while also entertaining the audience, is mounting a serious attack on the corruption of the society of his time. By comparing and contrasting appropriately selected parts of the plays, give your reaction to the above view. Your argument should include relevant comments on each writer s dramatic methods and contextual material about the nature of the Comedy of Manners. A2L3S7 2441 4 [Turn over Option C Webster: The Duchess of Malfi Albee: Who s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Each of the plays, The Duchess of Malfi and Who s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, offers a picture of a bleak and cruel world, lacking in any warm human relationships. Both plays present characters who reflect the selfish, materialistic attitudes of the period in which each play was written. By comparing and contrasting appropriately selected parts of the plays, give your reaction to the above view. Your argument should include relevant comments on each writer s dramatic methods and contextual material about the periods reflected in the plays.
