Leadership and Industrial Relations Deirdre Walsh has just been promoted to Head of New Product Development at Opid plc, a multinational business specialising in the design and production of MP3 players. She will now have to manage forty workers, mostly male, grouped into different project teams. Each team is responsible for developing a new product. Workers are generally very experienced and highly skilled. Deirdre will operate in a high pressure environment where important new product decisions may have to be made quickly. In spite of this, it is essential that she makes good decisions wrong decisions tend to be very costly for the business. Deirdre was appointed to replace Tim Jones, who left after a year with the company to take up a position abroad. Tim was not popular with many of the workforce. Although his autocratic style of leadership was successful in terms of the number of new products developed, it sometimes caused other problems. On one occasion the Labour Relations Agency became involved in a dispute concerning management/employee relations. Deirdre is relatively young, has a very friendly personality and until now has not given much thought to her leadership style. However, Deirdre has been advised by one of the company directors that she needs to stamp her authority early and take no nonsense if she wants to achieve results. Another colleague has advised her that a democratic style might work better. (a) Explain how the Labour Relations Agency in Northern Ireland helps businesses such as Opid plc. [10] (b) Discuss whether Deirdre should take her colleague s advice and adopt a democratic leadership style. [15] AST2S6R 2352.05 2 2 Study the information below and answer the questions that follow. (a) (i) Explain why it is important for Gordon to prepare a cash flow forecast for Troughs. [4] (ii) Calculate the missing figures for August, September, October and December as indicated in Table 1 above. You are not required to copy out Table 1.
